Summary The evolution of blood ammonia after venipuncture is studied. Its increase in heparinized blood is small (0.24 µg. in 120 minutes in 1 ml.) but is statistically very significant. This is much more pronounced in oxalated blood. The increase in heparinized blood in cirrhosis is statistically greater than in normals. This occurs also in those cases where the standard value is within 2 σ limits of normal. In hepatic coma with high ammonia it does also exist, but not in those cases with normal blood values. The hypothesis is formulated that an ammoniogenic substance is increased in some pathologic conditions, or that proteins are present which contain more labile amide groups.
