Three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus, from the Chehalis River drainage. Washington, U.S.A., that have lost the mosaic nuptial signal were more likely to be found in tannin stained sub-drainages whereas those expressing the mosaic nuptial signal were more likely to be found in sub-drainages that were not tannin stained. This result is consistent with the sensory drive model.
