Notes:	It is shown that although no Riccati equations in the strict sense are likely to exist for the self-dual Yang–Mills fields, certain "generalized Riccati equations'' derivable from the Bäcklund transformation do exist, and are capable of reproducing the linear system when a certain contraint is imposed.
