fussnote The present study sought to provide information on the question of whether there are differences between asthmatic subgroups (rapidly remitting, intermediate, and steroid dependent) in general ''neurotic'' or other personality characteristics. A variety of psychological tests and behavior rating data was obtained on 84 asthmatic children in residence at CARIH for approximately one year.No significant differences were found in any comparisons among asthmatic subgroups. In the light of these and related results from other investigations, the usefulness of personality profiles or global estimates of neuroticism as a means of discriminating between asthmatic groups was questioned. Attention was drawn to the more promising approach of exploring the functional relationships between various classes of stimuli and the asthmatic response. It was suggested that the creation of specialized research instruments for the testing of specific relationship between psychologically defined variables and asthma might represent an advance over the research use of the usual diagnostic psychological test.
