fussnote More than 150 oriented samples were collected along the Kaxigal-Lhasa road in the southwestern part of the Tibetan Plateau to determine the deformation aspect of the Tibetan region from a paleomagnetic point of view. The counter-clockwise deflection about 60^o in declination was revealed at four localities in the narrow zone along the Indus-Zangbo suture zone. A north to northeast direction (D = -9^o to 30^o) was observed at four localities, more than 14 km from the suture zone in the western Tibetan region. Significant tectonic deformation has occurred exclusively in a narrow zone whose width is about 40 km spanning the suture zone. The crustal blocks of this narrow zone were rotated in a compressive regime accompanied by left-lateral shear during the collision of the Indo-Eurasia continents. The deformation of the narrow zone behaves as a buffer zone in a tectonically gigantic dimension where the tangential stress is mainly absorbed.
