fussnote Atmospheric emission spectra have been measured at an altitude of about 3000m, from the Observatoire du Pic du Midi (France) in the wavelength range 17.5-20 μm. The very high spectral resolution (up to 0.02 cm^-^1) together with the high signal-to-noise ratio achieved enable us to assign the observed lines to CO"2, N"2O or H"2O. Existing spectroscopic molecular data (mainly the AFCRL compilation) have been compared with the observations. No serious deviations from the expected line frequencies are found for CO"2 and N"2O but important discrepancies appear for H"2^1^6O transitions occurring at energy levels greater than 2000 cm^-^1. A few lines due to H"2^1^7O and H"2^1^8O have been identified, and deviations from their expected frequencies as large as 0.3 cm^-^1 have been measured.
