fussnote XPS studies of grain boundaries from different high density sintered ceramic YBa"2Cu"3O"7 superconductors were performed. Compared to the bulk, grain boundaries show significant differences in stoichiometry which give clear evidence of a Ba-Cu-oxide-rich grain boundary phase, originating from the liquid phase sintering process taking place if the temperature exceeds the eutectic between Ba"2Cu"3O"x and CuO at about 920^oC in oxygen. The average thickness of this non-superconducting phase is experimentally determined to be between 15 and 20 Å. This suggests that the location of the weak links, dominating the current transport at low fields, in sintered ceramic superconductors of the YBa"2Cu"3O"7 family are the grain boundaries.
