fussnote Prolonged reaction of CF"3COOH with Mo(CO)"3(P(OCH"3)"3)"3 in CH"2Cl"2 yields the dimer [Mo(CO)"2(μ(O)P(OCH"3)"2)P(OCH"3)"3CF"3COO]"2 in low yield. The complex has been characterized by the usual spectroscopic methods and by an X-ray crystal structure determination. The molybdenum atoms are linked by two OP bridges, the six-membered dimetallacycle adopting a twisted-boat conformation. Each molybdenum is seven-coordinated and has a capped trigonal prism geometry, the capping position being occupied by an oxygen atom of the bridging OP(OCH"3)"2 group. A mechanism similar to the well-known Michaelis-Arbuzov rearrangement is proposed and substantiated by the concomitant apparition of CF"3COOCH"3 during the reaction.
