Ultrastructural changes in the epidermis of xeroderma pigmentosum lesions in various stages of development

Zusammenfassung In den schuppenden und dyskeratotischen Hautläsionen von insgesamt 4 Patienten mit Xeroderma pigmentosum wurden ultramikroskopisch folgende kennzeichnende Merkmale beobachtet: erhöhte Zahl mitotischer Zellen, Unregelmäßigkeiten in der Kernmorphologie, zahlenmäßige Zunahme und auffällige Verteilung der Mitochondrien, des endoplasmatischen Reticulums und der Tonofilamente, Beteiligung von Basalzellen am Dyskeratoseprozeß. Diese Veränderungen sind zwar bemerkenswert, können jedoch nicht als diagnostische Kriterien für eine maligne Entartung der Zellen verwendet werden.

Summary The remarkable findings from an ultrastructural study of desquamating and dyskeratotic lesions of 4 cases of Xeroderma Pigmentosum are: increases in mitoses, irregularities of nuclear morphology, increase and peculiar distribution of the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and tonofilaments involvement of the cells in the basal layer in the dyskeratotic lesions. Although these cellular changes are impressive, they cannot be considered to be diagnostic criteria of cell malignancy.
