Summary Tissue reactions around various silicone implants, contaminated by Staphylococcus albus and bacillus subtilis, have been studied in rabbits by Silicone Radiation Measurements. No increase of phagocytosis was found around the contaminated materials compared to the non-contaminated implants. The morphology of the capsule was the same in the contaminated and the non-contaminated groups. Concerning the specific tissue reaction in silicone implants, a prophylactic use of antibiotics in clinical augmentation mammaplasty seems not mandatory.
