Abstract Tracer techniques to measure carbon-14 incorporation from labeled food can seriously overestimate the growth of an organism. The degree of overestimation can change with varying food supply and correlates with changes in the tracer activity in lipid and protein pools of the organism. These changes may be associated with differential metabolic partitioning of newly assimilated food.
