Abstract Whole blood calcium activity, total plasma calcium, pH, pCO2, and plasma albumen concentrations were measured in ten patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. Since calcium activity was the same before and after bypass, routine monitoring of calcium activity is only recommended when large blood transfusions are given. Depression of myocardial contractility post-bypass is rarely related to a low blood calcium activity.
