Abstract Discrete distributions of amplitude of basic EPSP in vertebrate interneuronal synapses were obtained using the maximum likelihood method. Unequal intervals found between the values of calculated densities indicate the quantal nature of the signal. It was shown that quantal levels of nerve impulse transmission due to the structural arrangement of interneuronal connections may be distinguished using a binomial model, approximating as it does to empirical distributions. Systematic discrepancies between empirical and modeled distributions indicate the need to extend the model, however.
