Summary It was shown from laboratory investigations of P depleted soil that phosphatase activity and ATP content were dependent partly on the content of plant available P and partly on the root intensity in soils. Phosphatase activity and ATP content were higher in soil samples from plots supplied with P compared with plots not receiving any P. Addition of phosphatase to soil or pure sand was only to a small extent followed by an increase in phosphatase activity.
