Abstract The hypothesis that the extent of geochemical evolution of lateritic iron oxides gives an indication of the relative age of the laterite is tested on a vertical profile in a gold mine near Kalgoorlie using Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. No correlation between the structural or compositional properties of the iron oxides and their depth in the profile is found.
