Abstract This paper presents a new approach to improving the fatigue strength of sheet material by edge treatment. The improvement is achieved by inducing a compressive residual stress, by means of a mechanical procedure called edge dimpling, to a finite length along the edge. The new technique can be utilized to increase the fatigue resistance of plates with large-scale stress concentrations such as an unstressed access-door opening into a wing structure, stress concentrations at the corners of window doublers or long, wide slots in the structures.
