Publication Date: 2023-09-21Description: How to do cultural studies in the twenty-first century? This essay collection is not a handbook, encyclopedia, or a "state of the field" compendium. Instead, it is a reflexive exercise in cultural studies, featuring fifteen accessible essays on a selection of critical key works published since 2000. The contributors aim to provide readers with a fresh and engaging look at recent criticism, exploring the interdisciplinary traffic of theories, methods, and ideas within the field of cultural and literary studies. This book shows how the work of Lauren Berlant, Rita Felski, Fred Moten, Anna Tsing, and others can inspire new thinking and theorizing for the twenty-first century. Keywords: Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie ; Literatur, Rhetorik, Literaturwissenschaft ; Social sciences, sociology, anthropology ; Literature, rhetoric and criticism ; Cultural Theory; Contemporary; America; American Studies ; Ethnologie, Kulturanthropologie, Ethnosoziologie ; Literaturwissenschaft, Sprachwissenschaft, Linguistik ; Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology, Ethnosociology ; Science of Literature, Linguistics ; Interdisziplinarität ; Kultur ; Kulturwissenschaft ; Alltagskultur ; Medientheorie ; interdisciplinarity ; culture ; cultural studies ; popular culture ; media theoryType: Sammelwerk, collection -

Publication Date: 2022-12-28Description: Following the work of Barbara Adam (1998) and Ulrike Felt (2016), we draw particular attention to 'timeprints' in the assessment and selection of radioactive waste management (RWM) options. Using the example of Belgium, we identify four different timeprints mobilized (un)consciously by stakeholders when assessing RWM options, namely trajectorism, promise economy, radioactive waste identity, and multi-situated timeprints. We show that each of these timeprints has a significant impact on the RWM option to be considered and actively determines future radioactive waste management pathways in the form of 'tacit governance'.In Anlehnung an die Arbeiten von Barbara Adam (1998) und Ulrike Felt (2016) legen wir besonderes Augenmerk auf die zeitlichen Abläufe bei der Bewertung und Auswahl von Optionen für die Entsorgung radioaktiver Abfälle (radioactive waste management - RWM). Keywords: Technik, Technologie ; Technology (Applied sciences) ; politics of time; radioactive waste management options; tacit governance; timeprints ; Technikfolgenabschätzung ; Technology Assessment ; Belgien ; Kernkraftwerk ; Radioaktivität ; Entsorgung ; Lagerung ; Belgium ; nuclear power plant ; radioactivity ; waste disposal ; storageType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2024-04-15Description: Context: In Germany, vocational education and training (VET) plays a key role in the transition from school to working life. Due to its proximity to the labour market and an increasingly digitised, connected world, the professional knowledge requirements of VET teachers are changing and an adjustment of competence frameworks for vocational teachers is needed. Approach: Since its introduction, the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge) framework of Shulman and Mishra and Koehler has been repeatedly used in the international research discourse as a framework for capturing teachers' professional knowledge. Given the infrequent reference to TPACK in the field of vocational education and training (VET), this theoretical article aims to adapt the TPACK framework for VET teachers. A literature review revealed the importance of developing an adapted TPACK framework that takes into account the peculiarities of the German vocational school system as well as the non technical personal service sector. Based on this research gap, an appropriately adapted TPACK framework was developed. The focus of this article lies on VET of nutritional science and home economics. Findings: After considering and analysing the requirements of the VET system in Germany in the context of digitalisation, it is suggested to adapt and enlarge the existing TPACK framework, thus creating an N-TPACK framework, taking into account "Networking and Collaborative Knowledge (NK)" as an aspect of essential VET teachers' professional knowledge. Conclusion: The present theoretical article considers the research desideratum of extending the TPACK framework by developing a theoretical N-TPACK framework as well as examining and discussing the various knowledge areas. Building on this theoretical article, a survey of the current status quo of these professional knowledge areas among (prospective) VET teachers in the subject area of nutrition and home economics is necessary, in order to provide orientation and to be able to derive recommended actions for an up-to-date and forward looking teacher education and training. Keywords: Bildung und Erziehung ; Education ; Vocational Education and Training, VET; Vocational Teachers; Skills and Knowledge ; Lehre und Studium, Professionalisierung und Ethik, Organisationen und Verbände der Erziehungswissenschaft ; Bildungswesen quartärer Bereich, Berufsbildung ; Training, Teaching and Studying, Professional Organizations of Education and Pedagogics ; Vocational Training, Adult Education ; Berufsbildung ; Ausbildung ; Digitalisierung ; Lehrer ; Kompetenz ; Qualifikationsanforderungen ; Lehrerbildung ; Bundesrepublik Deutschland ; vocational education ; training ; digitalization ; teacher ; competence ; qualification requirements ; teacher training ; Federal Republic of Germany ; 20100 ; 10600Type: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2022-08-22Description: In the social sciences, teaching methods, approaches and tools have advanced over the past decades. This progress, however, has mostly taken place on a theoretical level. Very few of the ideas and findings were implemented in class. A typical class in the social sciences remains in a lecture format with hardly any technology besides slides. There are several reasons why courses like Political Science, International Relations and others have not implemented more of the methodological and technological progress that has taken place in the 20th and 21st century so far. While the COVID19 pandemic that started in 2020 has caused a major step forward towards acceptance of technologies in the social sciences there are more tools and devices that will bring further experiences to the discipline in the near future. One of the technologies that is entering higher education now is Virtual Reality (VR). This chapter will explore VR as a technology, discuss its application in higher education and analyse its contemporary and future role in the social sciences. Keywords: Bildung und Erziehung ; Education ; Bildungswesen tertiärer Bereich ; Unterricht, Didaktik ; University Education ; Curriculum, Teaching, Didactics ; virtuelle Realität ; Unterrichtstechnologie ; Innovationspotential ; Lehrmethode ; Digitalisierung ; computerunterstützter Unterricht ; Unterrichtsmedien ; Sozialwissenschaft ; Hochschulbildung ; virtual reality ; instructional technology ; innovation potential ; teaching method ; digitalization ; computer-aided instruction ; instructional media ; social science ; university level of education ; 10100 ; 10800 ; 10500 ; 29900 ; 39900Type: Sammelwerksbeitrag, collection article -

Publication Date: 2021-05-01Description: With the release of the latest IPCC report, the urgency to steer the transport sector toward ecological sustainability has been recognized more and more broadly. To better understand, the prerequisites for a transition to sustainable mobility, we argue that interdisciplinary mobility research needs to revisit the interaction between social structures and individual agency by focusing on social norms. While critical sociological approaches stress the structural barriers to sustainable mobility, political discourse over sustainable mobility is still largely dominated by overly individualistic approaches, which focus on individual behavior change neglecting its social embeddedness. With discursive struggles over sustainable mobility intensifying, it becomes more urgent to better understand how structural contexts condition individual travel behavior, while at the same time showing how individuals engage in processes of social change. Against this backdrop, the article seeks to deepen the cooperation between sociological and psychological research in mobility transitions research. Building on a broad body of literature, we revisit recent theoretical approaches, which conceptualize the role of individual agency in sustainability transitions. On this basis, we highlight the role of social norms in mobility transitions as a key concept bridging individual behavior and social structures. Using Strong Structuration Theory as an integrative framework, we focus on the role of individual agency in processes of re-negotiation of social norms. Our main hypothesis is that individuals can contribute to mobility transitions by influencing and re-negotiating social norms, especially in the context of windows of opportunity. We analyze how focusing on the dynamic and conflicted nature of social norms can help to illustrate leverage points for a mobility transition as well as inspire future empirical research in the field. This includes that individuals can influence social norms through changing their own travel behavior as well as through engaging in discourse on transport policies. Keywords: Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Psychologie ; Sociology & anthropology ; Psychology ; agency; interdisciplinary; norm conflict; transition ; Verkehrssoziologie ; Sozialpsychologie ; Sociology of Traffic ; Social Psychology ; Verkehr ; Planung ; Mobilität ; Nachhaltigkeit ; soziale Norm ; Verkehrspolitik ; Partizipation ; Verhaltensänderung ; Umweltverhalten ; Verkehrsmittelwahl ; traffic ; planning ; mobility ; sustainability ; social norm ; transportation policy ; participation ; behavior modification ; environmental behavior ; choice of means of transportType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2025-01-30Description: Introduction: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become ubiquitous in medicine, business, manufacturing and transportation, and is entering our personal lives. Public perceptions of AI are often shaped either by admiration for its benefits and possibilities, or by uncertainties, potential threats and fears about this opaque and perceived as mysterious technology. Understanding the public perception of AI, as well as its requirements and attributions, is essential for responsible research and innovation and enables aligning the development and governance of future AI systems with individual and societal needs. Methods: To contribute to this understanding, we asked 122 participants in Germany how they perceived 38 statements about artificial intelligence in different contexts (personal, economic, industrial, social, cultural, health). We assessed their personal evaluation and the perceived likelihood of these aspects becoming reality. Results: We visualized the responses in a criticality map that allows the identification of issues that require particular attention from research and policy-making. The results show that the perceived evaluation and the perceived expectations differ considerably between the domains. The aspect perceived as most critical is the fear of cybersecurity threats, which is seen as highly likely and least liked. Discussion: The diversity of users influenced the evaluation: People with lower trust rated the impact of AI as more positive but less likely. Compared to people with higher trust, they consider certain features and consequences of AI to be more desirable, but they think the impact of AI will be smaller. We conclude that AI is still a "black box" for many. Neither the opportunities nor the risks can yet be adequately assessed, which can lead to biased and irrational control beliefs in the public perception of AI. The article concludes with guidelines for promoting AI literacy to facilitate informed decision-making.Keywords: Technik, Technologie ; Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Technology (Applied sciences) ; Sociology & anthropology ; affect heuristic; public perception; user diversity; mental models; technology acceptance; responsible research and innovation (RRI); collingridge dilemma; Interpersonales Vertrauen (KUSIV3) (ZIS 37) ; Technikfolgenabschätzung ; Wissenschaftssoziologie, Wissenschaftsforschung, Technikforschung, Techniksoziologie ; Technology Assessment ; Sociology of Science, Sociology of Technology, Research on Science and Technology ; künstliche Intelligenz ; Vertrauen ; Benutzer ; neue Technologie ; Akzeptanz ; Forschung ; Risikoabschätzung ; Innovation ; Wahrnehmung ; Bundesrepublik Deutschland ; Einstellung ; artificial intelligence ; confidence ; user ; new technology ; acceptance ; research ; risk assessment ; innovation ; perception ; Federal Republic of Germany ; attitudeType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Published 2024Staff View FulltextPublication Date: 2024-02-06Description: Background: There is evidence that extraversion and associated frequent personal and digital social contacts are associated with mental health, reflected in reduced risk for anxiety or depression. However, excessive social media use (SMU) has been related to a decrease of mental health. We test how extraversion moderates the effect of SMU on anxiety and depression in times of social distancing. Methods: Data were collected with an app-based survey combined with passive sensing of social media usage time. We analyzed SMU (objective average duration of communication app usage) and cross-sectional questionnaire data from 486 adults (mean age = 42.42). Using multiple regression models, we tested how SMU, extraversion and their interaction relate to individual depression and anxiety scores. Results: Depression scores were associated with a higher SMU and lower extraversion. There was a significant positive relationship between SMU and extraversion that predicted higher depression scores. Limitations: In the present sample, there is a recruitment bias since only data from smartphones running iOS were included. Future research should also take a closer look at the purpose behind SMU. Conclusions: We conclude that extraversion might be a protective factor for depression which can turn into a harmful one if it is related to higher SMU. Thus, the interplay between SMU and extraversion needs to be considered when predicting individual differences in mental health. Keywords: Publizistische Medien, Journalismus,Verlagswesen ; Psychologie ; News media, journalism, publishing ; Psychology ; social media use; ZIS 76 ; interaktive, elektronische Medien ; psychische Störungen, Behandlung und Prävention ; Interactive, electronic Media ; Psychological Disorders, Mental Health Treatment and Prevention ; Extraversion ; Soziale Medien ; Depression ; Angst ; psychische Gesundheit ; extroversion ; social media ; depression ; anxiety ; mental healthType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

14Environmental Inequality in Austria: Sociodemographic Disparities in Perceived Environmental QualityStaff View Fulltext
Publication Date: 2024-02-05Description: This quantitative study investigates the relationship between perceived environmental conditions (air pollution, noise, extreme heat, access to green space) and socioeconomic status in Austria. Building upon the work of Baud and Wegscheider-Pichler (2019) and integrated into the theoretical framework of environmental justice, it aims to enrich the empirical body of literature on environmental inequality in Austria by adding the subjective perspective of affected individuals in order to highlight individual vulnerabilities and capability to adapt. Data from the Austrian Microcensus 2019, a large-scale population-based survey, is used. In this survey, information on perceived exposure to adverse environmental conditions was collected from a total of 7,021 respondents. To analyse the association between subjective exposure and sociodemographic characteristics, binomial and ordinal logistic regression models are applied. The findings suggest that lower income is associated with a lower perception of overall environmental quality and a higher level of perceived exposure to air pollution. A correlation between income and level of noise disturbance is only present in Vienna, and no relationship between income and perceived heat stress can be identified. However, in almost all categories of adverse environmental impacts, women feel more affected than men, and housing conditions are significantly related to perceived noise annoyance. Mixed results are found regarding the role of migration background. While individuals with migration backgrounds report higher personal exposure to air pollution, they rate the overall environmental quality as better than people without migration backgrounds. In line with other empirical studies, the results confirm that exposure to adverse environmental conditions is distributed unequally across society in Austria. To address these inequalities, concerns of environmental justice should be integrated into public discourse and policymaking. Keywords: Ökologie ; Philosophie ; Ecology ; Philosophy ; EU-SILC ; Ökologie und Umwelt ; Philosophie, Theologie ; Ecology, Environment ; Philosophy, Ethics, Religion ; Österreich ; Umwelt ; Ungleichheit ; Umweltfaktoren ; soziale Faktoren ; demographische Faktoren ; Umweltverschmutzung ; soziale Gerechtigkeit ; Austria ; environment ; inequality ; environmental factors ; social factors ; demographic factors ; environmental pollution ; social justice ; 10300Type: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2023-08-15Description: We know that robots are just machines. Why then do we often talk about them as if they were alive? The author explores this fascinating phenomenon, providing a rich insight into practices of animacy (and inanimacy) attribution to robot technology: from science-fiction to robotics R&D, from science communication to media discourse, and from the theoretical perspectives of STS to the cognitive sciences. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, and backed by a wealth of empirical material, the author shows how scientists, engineers, journalists - and everyone else - can face the challenge of robot technology appearing "a little bit alive" with a reflexive and yet pragmatic stance. Keywords: Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Sociology & anthropology ; Animacy; Anthropomorphism; Agency; Society; Science; Sociology of Technology; Sociology of Culture; Sociology of Work and Industry ; Wissenschaftssoziologie, Wissenschaftsforschung, Technikforschung, Techniksoziologie ; Sociology of Science, Sociology of Technology, Research on Science and Technology ; Roboter ; künstliche Intelligenz ; Technologie ; Mensch-Maschine-System ; Science Fiction ; robot ; artificial intelligence ; technology ; man-machine system ; science fictionType: Dissertation, phd thesis -

Publication Date: 2022-05-30Description: Russia's attack on Ukraine has once again highlighted Europe's heavy dependence on Russian natural gas and thus, among other things, underlined the significance of energy cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Turkey. Traditionally, Turkish-European energy relations have prioritised the diversification of energy resources in the face of Europe's dependence on Russia. The new emerging political, geopolitical, and energy context will have repercussions on Turkish-European energy relation. However, it is the ambitious process of decarbonisation of the economy and energy launched by the EU that will decisively shape the nature and future of Turkey-EU energy relations. Indeed, both European and Turkish interests related to energy security, energy affordability, and climate change mitigation require EU-Turkey cooperation in the decarbonisation process, which is expected to be very challenging. Energy transition is the key to medium- and long-term energy security for both sides. Publication Date: 2021-04-30Description: How do people live together in cities shaped by inequality? This comparative ethnography of two African cities, Maputo and Johannesburg, presents a new narrative about social life in cities often described as sharply divided. Based on the ethnography of entangled lives unfolding in a township and in a suburb in Johannesburg, in a bairro and in an elite neighborhood in Maputo, the book includes case studies of relations between domestic workers and their employers, failed attempts by urban elites to close off their neighborhoods, and entanglements emerging in religious spaces and in shopping malls. However, complex, cognitive tasks are also subject of change, due to the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Smart assistants are finding their way into the world of knowledge work and require cooperation with humans. Here, trust is an essential factor that determines the success of human-AI cooperation. Within this article, an analysis within production management identifies possible antecedent variables on trust in AI and evaluates these due to interaction scenarios with AI. The results of this research are five antecedents for human trust in AI within production management. From these results, preliminary design guidelines are derived for a socially sustainable human-AI interaction in future production management systems. Practitioner summary: In the future, artificial intelligence will assist cognitive tasks in production management. In order to make good decisions, humans trust in AI has to be well calibrated. For trustful human-AI interactions, it is beneficial that humans subjectively perceive AI as capable and comprehensible and that they themselves are digitally competent. Keywords: Technik, Technologie ; Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Technology (Applied sciences) ; Sociology & anthropology ; Production management; cyber production management; trustartificial intelligence; machine learning ; Technikfolgenabschätzung ; Wissenschaftssoziologie, Wissenschaftsforschung, Technikforschung, Techniksoziologie ; Technology Assessment ; Sociology of Science, Sociology of Technology, Research on Science and Technology ; Digitalisierung ; Technik ; Technikfolgen ; Technologie ; Daten ; künstliche Intelligenz ; Produktion ; Wissensarbeit ; wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit ; digitalization ; engineering ; effects of technology ; technology ; data ; artificial intelligence ; production ; knowledge work ; economic cooperationType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2024-08-09Description: Innovation is ubiquitous and has become a universal term that is indispensable to describe interventions, projects, or products. Franziska Sörgel argues that emotions influence innovations as they are inherent in initial ideas, expectations and habitual evaluation criteria that impact the development process. Instead of assuming that the innovation process is subject to rational and linear creativity, the study adopts the notion of ›moral economies‹ by Lorraine Daston as a space for negotiation. Such an approach enables decision-makers to question the evaluation criteria and patterns for technological developments before implementing them in society. Keywords: Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Sociology & anthropology ; Wissenschaftssoziologie, Wissenschaftsforschung, Technikforschung, Techniksoziologie ; Sociology of Science, Sociology of Technology, Research on Science and Technology ; Innovation ; Gefühl ; Moral ; Wissenschaftssoziologie ; Ökonomie ; Techniksoziologie ; Technologie ; Wissenschaft ; Soziologie ; Kulturanthropologie ; innovation ; emotion ; morality ; sociology of science ; economy ; sociology of technology ; technology ; science ; sociology ; cultural anthropologyType: Dissertation, phd thesis
