In this work, a general theory for the development of a Time Temperature Integrator, TTI-system, is outlined. A z-value (or activation energy) of the TTI-system equal to that of target index is crucial for the usefulness of a system to monitor the impact of thermal processes on foods. The proposed TTI, namely the heat-stable fraction of peroxidase covalently immobilized on porous glass beads in dodecane, can be used to indicate the intensity of a delivered pasteurization process when a z-value of 10°C is used for calculating the lethality. Lethalities read from the bio-indicator showed excellent agreement with those integrated from the measured time-temperature data.

Food resource partitioning between similar-sized, sympatric Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis was examined as a possible mechanism enabling their coexistence in a stream (Allaire) of the Sainte-Marguerite River ecosystem, Quebec, Canada. Fish stomach contents and invertebrate drift were collected concurrently during three diel cycles in August to September 1996. The food and feeding habits of an allopatric brook trout population in a nearby stream (Epinette) were studied for comparison. The diel feeding rhythms of the two coexisting fish species were similar. The composition of their diet, however, showed significant differences. Atlantic salmon predominantly (60–90%) fed on aquatic insects, mainly Ephemeroptera (35–60% of the diet). The brook trout mostly (50–80%) fed upon the allochthonous terrestrial insects (mainly adults of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera) which comprised 5–40% of the stream drift. The allopatric brook trout fed opportunistically on the more abundant aquatic insects and terrestrial insects rarely formed 25% of its diet. The allopatric trout fed nearly twice as much as the sympatric brook trout during a day. The results suggest that the differences in feeding by brook trout in the two streams (with and without Atlantic salmon) are the result of inter-specific interaction with Atlantic salmon and are not related to the differences in food availability between the two streams. Food resource partitioning between Atlantic salmon and brook trout may be viewed as an adaptive response resulting in a greater exploitation of available resources and coexistence.

Abstract Faster product development and increased competition in retail industries is resulting in shorter and shorter product life-cycles. This phenomenon is making it more difficult for a firm to accurately estimate random demand of such products and to plan their one-time order quantity accordingly. In this paper, we develop a model to assess the multiple effects of coordinated – i.e., joint – stocking and prior-sale discount decisions: (i) on the reduction of demand uncertainty; (ii) on maximization of the expected profit; and (iii) on the probability of achieving or exceeding it. We develop the joint optimal decisions that maximize the expected profit and discuss a procedure for computing the probability that the realized value of the (random) profit will exceed its maximum expected value. We present qualitative results on the varying effects of joint decisions on increasing the expected profit and the probability of achieving or exceeding it. We also describe a detailed numerical study examining the effects of varying parameter values on the percentage increase in expected profit with joint decision making. The paper concludes with extensions of the model that can deal with more general situations.

Abstract Make-to-order manufacturers are facing unprecedented challenges to fill their customer orders quickly and to reduce their operating costs. In this paper, we first describe and discuss order taking and lead time quoting practice in a real world make-to-order manufacturing system. We then develop a model for this practical problem to study the conflicting objectives of delivering customized orders quickly and maximizing expected profit. The primary goal of this paper is to develop a general model for studying the trade-offs and the interrelationships among the following manufacturing performance measures: manufacturing flow times, quoted lead time reliability (earliness and tardiness), throughput (or demand) rates, inventory levels, resource utilization, and expected profits. These and other related managerial issues are explored. Our structural results yield insights into basic choices between filling customer orders quickly and maximizing expected profit.

Abstract We propose a spin-charge separation scheme based on thet-J model. Such a spin-charge separation state can reproduce various 1D correlations at strong-coupling fixed-point. At 2D half-filling, a long-range AF order is recovered, and a spin-charge deconfinement is found at finite doping in 2D. In this spin-charge separation regime, anomalous magnetic and transport properties are obtained. We find interesting similarities of these anomalies to those found in high-T c cuprates.

Abstract This paper explores ways of conceptualizing and studying the power of coordination and strategic alliances within a manufacturing and distribution supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one distributor. The supply chain operates to meet price-sensitive random demand of a product with a short product life cycle. We derive closed-form multi-attribute measures of performance for the supply chain in the presence of and in the absence of coordination of pricing and production/ordering decisions. The optimal coordinated pricing and production/ordering policies, as well as each party's optimal policies in the absence of coordination, are developed. Our results yield insights into basic managerial issues for this type of manufacturing and distribution supply chains.
