The electroluminescent properties of three different device structures (A:ITO/SiO2/Alq3/SiO2/Al, B:ITO/Alq3/SiO2/Al, and C:ITO/SiO2/Alq3/Al) based on the tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) were investigated. A blue electroluminescence at 457 nm was obtained from device (A) and (B), and the green emission at 518 nm was obtained from device (C). It is generally agreed that the green emission originates from the recombination of the singlet excitons. The blue emission, here, is attributed to the direct transitions between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the highest occupied molecular orbital of Alq3. This is due to the electric field-induced excitons dissociation and the space charge accumulation at the interface. The high internal electric field enhances the dissociation of neutral singlet excitations into LUMO states and inhibits the formation of the singlet excitons, therefore enhances the probability for direct interband transitions of the relaxed carriers. The intensity of the blue emission is dependent on the operating frequency. This indicates that space charge accumulation time and effective internal electric field are responsible for the blue emission intensity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract Proton MR spectra of the basal ganglia were obtained from 28 patients, 24 male and 14 female, median age 16.3 months (5 weeks to 31 years). They included 17 patients with normal MRI of the basal ganglia without metabolic disturbance (control group) and 11 patients with various metabolic diseases: one case each of high serum sodium and high serum osmolarity, cobalamin C deficiency, Leigh disease, Galloway-Mowat syndrome, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease, hemolytic-uremic syndrome and Wilson disease and two cases of Alagille syndrome and methylmalonic acidemia with abnormal MRI of the basal ganglia or blood or urine analysis (abnormal group). The MR spectrum was measured by using STEAM. The MR-visible water content of the region of interest was obtained. Levels of myoinositol, choline, creatine and N -acetylaspartate were measured using a semiquantitative approach, with absolute reference calibration. In the control group, there was a gradual drop of water content over the first year of life; N -acetylaspartate, creatine and myoinositol levels showed no significant change with age, in contrast to the occipital, parietal and cerebellar regions. Choline showed a gradual decrease for the first 2 years of life and then remained fairly constant. In the abnormal group the water content was not significantly different. N -Acetylaspartate was decreased in patients with high serum sodium and high serum osmolarity, cobalamin C deficiency, Leigh disease and one case of methylmalonic acidemia. Decreased creatine was also found in Leigh disease, and decreased choline in Galloway-Mowat syndrome and Wilson disease. Myoinositol was elevated in the patient with abnormally high serum sodium, and decreased in the hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

Abstract We studied 14 young people with newly diagnosed hemisphere tumors, aged from 3 to 20 years (average 10 years). All underwent surgery following MR imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS). The tumors studied were three glioblastomas, one each of ganglio-glioblastoma, primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), rhabdoid teratoid tumor, pilocytic astrocytoma, ependymoma, anaplastic ependymoma, and gliomatosis cerebri, and four gangliogliomas. Four patients died; ten patients are alive (five with stable residual tumor, five with no evident tumor). Images and spectra were acquired on a 1.5-T imager. Proton MRS was performed before gadolinium injection in all but one case. Single-voxel techniques were utilized in all cases, using a spin-echo or STEAM sequence with a long echo time (135 or 270 ms). Peak areas of N -acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), and creatine and phosphocreatine (Cr) were assessed. The NAA/Cho peak-area ratio was very low in the patients who died (mean ± s. d. 0.20 ± 0.14), and higher in the patients who are alive (0.74 ± 0.47; P = 0.007 by two-tailed t -test). The Cr/Cho peak-area ratio also followed a similar trend for the two groups (mean ± s. d. 0.17 ± 0.07 and 0.49 ± 0.30, respectively; P = 0.01 by two-tailed t -test).

Abstract Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films were fabricated by the addition of 10 mol% excess Pb to the starting solution which was spin-coated onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The effect of film thickness on texture was investigated, and it is clear that the (100) texture gradually increases and the (111) texture decreases with increasing film thickness. A Pt x Pb intermetallic metastable phase was observed by X-ray diffraction, and it is found that the position of this peak shifted from 38.30° 2θ (d : 0.2348 nm) to 37.10° 2θ (d : 0.4213 nm) with increasing firing temperature from 350°C to 550°C. The (111) preferred orientation in the PZT film was promoted by the metastable Pt x Pb phase. The formation of the (100) texture of perovskite phase in the multilayer films was mainly attributed to the effects of both substrates and crystal growth rates which depend on the crystal orientation.
