Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are carried out to investigate the kinematics of vortical structures in a homogeneous shear flow, and their association with the momentum transfer is studied in detail. Longitudinal streamwise vortices are generated and conditionally averaged over all the computational region. The effects of the nonlinear term on their kinematics are investigated by comparing the DNS and Rapid Distortion Theory (i.e., RDT). As a result, some important similarities are found in the vortical structure between the homogeneous shear flow and near-wall turbulence. It is also found that the strain rate in the vortical structure, which is markedly affected by the nonlinear term, determines the transfer functions associated with the energy cascade of the turbulence. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

The mechanism of heat transport in geostrophic flows under various density stratifications has been studied by using both direct numerical simulation and rapid distortion theory. It is found that in cases with rotation, the iso-surfaces of the temperature fluctuations are aligned in the direction of the rotational axis, and they become very close to two-dimensional. Under stable stratification with rotation, the velocity and temperature fluctuations tend to oscillate with the Brunt–Väisälä frequency, while they tend to oscillate with a longer period in cases without rotation. Under unstable stratification with rotation, on the other hand, vortex columns are formed in the direction parallel to the axis of rotation owing to the effects of nonlinear interactions. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Low-Reynolds-number type k−cursive-epsilon and kt−cursive-epsilont models have been constructed with the aid of direct numerical simulation (DNS) databases. The proposed models incorporate new velocity and time scales to represent various sizes of eddies in velocity and thermal fields with different Prandtl numbers. The validity of the present k−cursive-epsilon model was tested by application to basic and complex flows such as flows with injection and suction, flows with strong adverse and favorable pressure gradients, and flows with separation and reattachment, while comparing the relevant DNS and reliable experimental data. Fundamental properties of the proposed kt−cursive-epsilont model were first verified in basic flows under arbitrary wall thermal boundary conditions and next in backward-facing step flows at various Prandtl numbers through a comparison of the predictions with the DNS and measurements. These comparisons have proven that the proposed models for both velocity and thermal fields have wide applicability to science and engineering and have sufficient capability to perform highly stable computations at any Prandtl numbers, irrespective of flow configurations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
