To carry out the assignment of the resonances of the glioma spectra, tumoral and normal rat brain tissues were studied in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro by one-dimensional and two-dimensional proton spectroscopy. N-Acetylaspartate was found at an extremely low level in the glioma. The change of peak ratio total creatine/3.2 ppm peak was found to be due to a simultaneous decrease of the total creatine content and an increase of the 3.2 ppm peak. The 3.2 ppm resonance in the glioma spectra has been shown to originate from choline, phosphocholine, glycerophosphocholine, taurine, inositol, and phosphoethanolamine. The increase of the 3.2 ppm peak in the glioma was found to result from the increase of taurine and phosphoethanolamine contents. The peak in the 1.3 ppm region of the glioma spectra was due to both lactate and mobile fatty acids. Moreover, two-dimensional spectroscopy of excised tissues and extracts showed the presence of hypotaurine only in the tumor.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The stages observed were diplokaryotic cells, sporogonial plasmodia, unikaryotic sporoblasts, and spores. Neither a sporophorous vesicle (pansporoblastic membrane) nor parasitophorous vacuole were differentiated around the developmental stages, which were in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. The polar tube (5-6 coils) was differentiated before fission of the sporogonial plasmodium. The mature spores measured 1.5 m̈m × 0.5 m̈. The spore wall was very thin as the endospore was absent or poorly differentiated. The organism is named Enterocytozoon bieneusi n. g., n. sp. and is assigned to the suborder Apansporoblastina.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The mean relative area, number and thickness of the elastic fibres were significantly increased in the cigarette smokers compared to the controls. These results were confirmed using antibodies to elastin or the microfibrillar component of elastic tissue. In the smokers the broader and more fragmented elastic fibres in the skin were not as intensely stained as those of the non-smokers and the ultrastructural alterations of the elastic fibres were similar to those in solar elastosis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-8889Keywords: Abdominal waggings ; evolution over time ; communication ; social waspsSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract The quantitative study of abdominal waggings in Polistes dominulus Christ, covering a total of 16,000 sequences of movements observed in 13 colonies (mono- and polygyne), showed or confirmed the following points. The same form of abdominal wagging, very frequent in this species, is carried out by foundresses in two contexts: when they are caring for their brood and during aggressive encounters with other adults. While the dominant female shows this behavior most often, it predominantly concerns “aggressive” waggings (0.51 sequence per social interaction for alpha females, 0.12 and 0.04 for beta and gamma); the movements related to feeding larvae are distributed much better among the foundresses of Polygyne nests (0.38 sequence per cell check for alpha, 0.24 and 0.21 for beta and gamma). The number of waggings carried out by the workers is negligible in normally constituted colonies (0.006 and 0.01, respectively, for the two contexts). The rate of occurrence of abdominal waggings changes with time. This change is opposite and symmetrical for the two types of waggings, although we were not able to establish any correlation between the number of the movements linked to feeding the larvae and the abundance or the composition of the brood. Abdominal wagging therefore appears as a means of communication between the different members in Polistes society, used in varying degrees by all foundresses; the change of its rate of occurrence over time suggests a possible influence on larvae, hence on the future status of newborn wasps (workers or future foundresses).Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Let (X n t ) be a Poisson sequence of independent Brownian motions in ℝ d ,d≧ 3; Let ℒ be a compact oriented submanifold of ℝ d , of dimension d−2 and volume ?; let Φ t be the sum of the windings of (X n s , 0≦ s≦ t) around ℒ; then Φ t /t converges in law towards a Cauchy variable of parameter ?/2. A similar result is valid when the winding is replaced by the integral of a harmonic 1-form in ℝ d \ℒ.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In this article, we study the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in ℝ3. The non linear integral equation satisfied by the Fourier transform of the Laplacian of the velocity field can be interpreted in terms of a branching process and a composition rule along the associated tree. We derive from this representation new classes where global existence and uniqueness can be proven.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
