Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The positron mobility in thermally grown SiO2 is deduced from Doppler broadening lineshape data on a metal-oxide-semiconductor sample for positrons implanted into the oxide layer. The fitted mobility is ∼13(10)×10−3 cm2/s V. This value is between that of the electron and hole mobilities in the same system and is two orders of magnitude smaller than the previous estimate from positron measurements.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Magnetic fields near the sample are used to focus the low-energy ions and typical currents achieved thus far exceed 100 nA/cm2 for 1-eV ion energies. The magnetic field of a magnet placed behind the sample significantly reduces the problem of transverse displacement of the ions due to beam divergence and space-charge effects. The magnetic field confines the particle to a circular orbit along the axial direction (cyclotron motion), while leaving the kinetic energy of the ion unaffected. We have utilized this method to interact Ar+ and CH+3 with 1-eV translational energy and 100 nA of current on a Pt surface.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Using metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures, the shift of centroid (peak) of γ-ray energy distributions emitted from positron annihilation has been measured as a function of incident positron energy. The Doppler centroid shift was found to be consistent with the positron motion in the MOS depletion region. The results are described by a one-dimensional positron diffusion model, and provide information on "effective'' positron diffusion length under applied field.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: ZnO nanowires were mass produced using a physical vapor deposition approach. The ZnO nanowire monocrystallites have an average diameter around 60 nm and length up to a few micrometers. The unidirectional growth of the ZnO nanowires was controlled by the conventional vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Intensive UV light emission peaked around 3.27 eV was observed at room temperature, which was assigned to emission from free exciton under low excitation intensity. The observed room temperature UV emission was ascribed to the decrease in structure defects as compared to bulk ZnO materials, and in particularly to the size effect in the ZnO wires. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1744-313XSource: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: The in vitro proliferative response of T cells primed with human thyroglobulin (Tg) was compared in 11 independent haplotypes on B10 background. B10.K and B10.S mice were the most responsive, whereas, with the exception of B10.PL (H-2u, all other B10 congenics were intermediate responders. The two best responders to in vitro challenge with human Tg, of the k and s haplotype, are the same as those showing H-2-linked susceptibility to induction of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) with mouse Tg. Since shared epitopes on human and mouse Tgs have been shown to be thyroiditogenic by adoptive transfer studies in CBA (H-2k) mice, the findings indicate that shared epitopes may be studied in appropriate (i.e. EAT-susceptible) strains of mice. Therefore, we proceeded to develop methods to produce T-cell lines and hybridomas to human Tg in B10.K and B10.S mice, test their cross-reactivity to heterologous Tgs and their Ia restriction patterns. By using antigen-presenting cells from recombinant strains, we identified restriction elements encoded by the I-A subregion alone and a combinatorial molecule from the I-AI/I-E subregions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
