The properties of human skin in vivo, and in particular the properties of the stratum corneum, were studied using a combined experimental-numerical approach. Tests on a small number of volunteers indicated that the in vivo testing method was sensitive to the effect of skin treatments and could distinguish their relative performances. The ingredients tested effectively made skin less stiff. Preliminary results showed that stratum corneum is highly anisotropic and that the data was in general agreement with some but not all published in vitro results, although this is the first time ever that Poisson ratios for human stratum corneum are presented.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Four quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for BPH resistance were detected. ESTs differentially regulated by BPH feeding were isolated by suppressive subtractive hybridization (SSH) and assigned to chromosomes based on RFLP mapping and searches of the rice genome database. The distribution of ESTs showed some clustering, and some ESTs are related to known QTLs and known BPH resistance genes. These findings suggest that the mapping of differentially induced ESTs may be a useful strategy for the identification of candidate plant defence genes, which could be beneficial in the development of a BPH-resistant rice variety.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1365-3059Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: Strains of the pathogen causing bacterial blight of kiwifruit in New Zealand, previously identified as Pseudomonas viridiflava, were examined using phenotypic and genotypic methods. Percentage DNA–DNA reassociation values for strains of the pathogen, with the type strains representing P. viridiflava and P. savastanoi, and representative strains within P. syringae, were obtained using the S1 endonuclease method. Strains of the pathogen were most similar to the type strain of P. savastanoi. This similarity was supported by examination of the ΔTm between representative strains. It is concluded that the pathogen can be considered as a member of the P. savastanoi genomic species. The pathogen from kiwifruit in New Zealand was also differentiated in genomic terms from P. syringae pv. actinidiae. Strains of the kiwifruit pathogen compared using the Biomerieux API Biotype 100 system exhibited consistent determinative tests which distinguished the pathogen from P. viridiflava and P. syringae pv. actinidiae. The origins of the pathogen in New Zealand are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Two major clinical subtypes of PC have been generally recognized. Symmetrically thickened fingernails and toenails are the defining characteristic of PC type 2 (PC-2) with onset at infancy. Pilosebaceous cysts are the best hallmark of PC-2, but they usually occur at puberty. Objectives To report a Chinese pedigree of PC-2 with unusually early onset sebaceous cysts and to explore the genetic mutation and its phenotype. Methods Exon 1 of keratin 17 was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from genomic DNA from the three patients in the pedigree, the proband, his half-sister and his younger son, two unaffected members in the pedigree and 50 unrelated and unaffected people. PCR products were directly sequenced to detect the mutation. Results Direct sequencing of the PCR products revealed a heterozygous 275A→G mutation in all three affected members. This mutation predicts the substitution of asparagine by serine in codon 92 (N92S) located in the 1A domain of keratin 17. Conclusions Mutation in the 1A domain of keratin 17 underlies the affected members' phenotype, PC-2 with early onset sebaceous cysts and late-onset thickened fingernails and toenails. The onset of the cysts is very early in some people within this family and the age at onset of thickened fingernails and toenails is variable within the family, implying the existence of modifying factors.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
