X-ray diffraction shows only (00l) peaks in the oxygen pressure range from 10−3 to 500 mTorr. However, the crystallinity of LSAT films is found to be sensitive to oxygen pressure and dependent on substrates. LSAT films on SrTiO3 have the narrowest full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.05° at 300 mTorr. The films on LaAlO3 exhibit a FWHM of 0.3° at 50–100 mTorr. On MgO substrate, significant improvement of crystallinity is achieved at 200–300 mTorr, but rocking curves give an FWHM of 0.70°–1.00° due to the large lattice mismatch between LSAT and MgO. Atomic force microscopy analyses demonstrate smooth LSAT surfaces without identified grains. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction studies suggest a two-dimensional growth mode for LSAT films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 and a three-dimensional growth mode for LSAT films on MgO. Cross-sectional high-resolution electron micrographs indicate that LSAT films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 have defect-free epitaxial structure and atomically flat interfaces. An 80 Å thick intermediate layer with partially disordering is observed between LSAT films and MgO substrates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: For 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)-treated (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oz[(Bi,Pb)-2223] super- conductors, a superstructure which can be described as 2a0×2b0×c0 has been observed by electron diffraction. Superconductivity is virtually destroyed in the TCNQ-treated (Bi,Pb)-2223 cuprate. Superconductivity (with Tc up to 110 K) may be recovered for a TCNQ-treated sample by being annealed in flowing oxygen gas. Then the 2a0×2b0×c0 superstructure is found to disappear. This suggests that the superstructure may be caused by an ordering of oxygen vacancies. High resolution transmission electron microscopic observations reveal that the oxygen vacancies reside not only in the CuO2 sheets, but also likely in the SrO sheets. A model for the superlattice in both CuO2−x and SrO1−y sheets is proposed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

By varying the composition of the monoxide pellet, the film orientation can be changed from c-axis to the predominantly a-axis one. The a-axis growth of the grains directly on the substrate is confirmed by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic observation, although the grains are twinned with 90° orientation. The a-axis films exhibit a Tc onset and Tc zero of approximately 110–127 and 55 K, respectively, suggesting substantial influence of weak links at the grain boundaries on their transport properties. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1460-2695Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract Conventionally, the fatigue threshold of a long-crack is obtained by load shedding using a constant normalized K-gradient, as recommended by ASTM E-647. However, this load shedding procedure often causes the crack opening displacement to decrease with increasing crack length, which may trigger crack closure. In this study, load shedding tests were conducted in load control following a power-law load shedding schedule such that the crack opening displacement was kept at a relatively constant level. Using this new testing procedure, it is shown that crack closure is not always as high as that associated with the ASTM recommended procedure at a given ΔK. Comparisons of fatigue crack growth rates under identical testing parameters, but with different closure levels produced by the two load shedding procedures, have been made for several structural alloys. The extrinsic shielding of the crack tip zone via crack closure has also been examined using an energy approach for these alloys. On the basis of these analyses, the true effective stress intensity range is evaluated for fatigue crack propagation and the role of crack closure in creating a fatigue threshold is re-assessed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The plastic replication technique was applied to observe surface short fatigue cracks. Fatigue cracks initiated continuously with increasing number of cycles. The failure of a specimen largely depended on the number and distribution of these short cracks. The relationship of surface fatigue crack density to both stress amplitude and number of cycles was determined.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1460-2695Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract— The work described in this paper characterizes short fatigue crack growth behaviour of Q2N steel having a complex microstructure and designated for pressure vessel and offshore structure applications. Short and long fatigue crack growth tests for this steel were conducted under three point bend loading conditions. It was found that, in the initial stages of growth, short cracks propagate much faster than those of long cracks when correlated with the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) parameter ΔK. A period of crack growth retardation was observed at crack lengths of approx 50 μm. The theory of the interaction between short cracks and grain boundaries fails to predict the occurrence of this deceleration minima. A new short crack deceleration mechanism is proposed based on experimental observation. Observation of the characteristic behaviour of short cracks allowed the development of a short crack growth model based on microstructural fracture mechanics analyses.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
