It is clear that neither transport process nor the behavior of instabilities can be treated in isolation. A model is developed for investigating the effects of the instabilities on global energy confinement in tokamaks. The results clearly demonstrate that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities coupled with the transport process change not only the value of global energy confinement time, but also, perhaps more importantly, the energy confinement scaling law. While considering MHD effects, global energy confinement becomes sensitively dependent on the boundary transport conditions, and the cases with and without MHD stability can result in quite different parameter behavior of the global energy confinement. Such coupling should be considered when attempts are made to analyze the global energy confinement in tokamaks. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Positive immunoreactivity was observed in all primary adenocarcinomas but not from squamous cell carcinomas. Many adenocarcinoma cells in distant metastatic sites or in tertiary lymph nodes were strongly stained for ErbB-2. These metastatic cells also showed an expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Detection of ErbB-2 mRNA by a reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction showed that the transcription occurred exclusively in adenocarcinomas. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating ErbB-2 expression in distant metastatic lesions of gynecologic cancers.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1998Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The epitaxial growth of thin (∼20–40 nm) Si buffer layer on Si(110) leads to the formation of ∼100-nm-wide, uniformly sized faceted pits. The cause of these rhombohedral pits is revealed to be the overgrowth of a homoepitaxial layer over clusters of coherent contaminant particles, possibly SiC. Deposition of Ge on such "pitted" surfaces shows highly selective nucleation of pairs of coherent islands at the opposite corners of the pits along the 〈110〉 direction. Continued deposition leads to strain relaxation of one or both of the islands within the pit which then rapidly coarsen to form a single Ge island within the pit. Our observations offer insight into heterogeneous nucleation mechanisms important for producing controlled arrays of self-assembled quantum dots. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1988Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We have studied the rehydrogenation and post-hydrogenation of a-Si:H using a Kaufman ion beam source. The achievement of an air-mass-one (AM1), photo-to-dark conductivity ratio of 5.6×105 with a rehydrogenated a-Si:H sample was reported earlier [Y. S. Tsuo, E. B. Smith, and S. K. Deb, Appl. Phys. Lett. 51, 1436 (1987)]. In this communication we report recent results of the rehydrogenation study and new results of a study of the post-hydrogenation of amorphous silicon deposited by glow discharge at 480 °C. AM1 photo-to-dark conductivity ratios as high as 9.5×106 (with a photoconductivity of 8.6×10−6 Ω cm−1) and 1.1×105 (with a photoconductivity of 6.3×10−6 Ω cm−1) have been obtained with a rehydrogenated sample and a post-hydrogenated sample, respectively. We also report the results of the hydrogen depth profile and photostability measurements of these samples.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Meiotic analysis revealed that only 13.2 and 18.0% of the meiocytes exhibited normal tetrad formation in HR and KV somatic hybrid plants, respectively, and irregular chromosome behaviour with univalent or multivalent pairing occurred. Moreover, meiotic abnormalities such as chromosome bridges, chromosomes orientated away from the equatorial plate, especially lagging chromosomes, which resulted in different sizes of pollen grain, were frequently observed in both somatic hybrids. As expected, the percentage of chromosome abnormalities was much lower in their corresponding diploid fusion parents. HR and KV had 15.4 and 7.2% pollen germinability, respectively, intermediate between their corresponding fusion parents. The meiotic behaviour of these somatic hybrids provided valuable information for their practical utilization in a citrus breeding programme.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
