    Description:
"In the debate on globalization it is often argued that multinational corporations (MNCs) have gained increasing power due to their growth and due to new global or transnational structures and strategies. This paper presents empirical evidence - especially from various national statistics ignored in the debate so far - that contradicts these assumptions and allow a deeper understanding of the development of the structures of MNCs. These data indicate that foreign direct investment (FDI) is not a good indicator for the real growth of MNCs. Rising prices of cross-border M&A transactions lead to high growth-rates of FDI while the real growth of MNCs has developed quite steadily over many decades. In manufacturing only affiliates in the periphery of MNCs' home regions show an accelerated expansion (partly due to the opening-up of Eastern Europe and China). Over-all, the development of MNCs does not show significant new characteristics in the 1990s, neither in quantitative nor in qualitative terms. Despite the continuous tendency to globalize managerial coordination, truly integrated global configurations have not emerged. Network-like manufacturing structures - and thus also the mobility of production - are still confined regionally. The final section tries to develop an explanation for the fact that MNCs are assigned this important new role in the globalization debate." (author's abstract)
Description:
Since 2019, the largest national parties in the European Parliament (EP) are Eurosceptic parties. This is one of the developments that has led scholars to question, whether European Parliament elections are still of second-order character or are now determined by European issues. This paper uses data from the ParlGov database and a variety of quantitative methods to show that the 2019 EP elections are still second-order national elections. A change from national to transnational lists might inspire a change in voter behaviour.

    Description:
This article examines the restructuring process following a cross-border merger in the pharmaceuticals sector. We show how national industrial relations systems account for some aspects of cross-national differences in the process and outcomes of restructuring. However, we also argue that institutionalist approaches to comparative analysis must be complemented by a focus on the material interests of organizational actors and the resources that they can deploy.

    Description:
Gender medicine has gained increasing importance in recent decades. Criticism of androcentric knowledge practices, gendered object–subject relations and the gender data gap sowed the seeds of gender-medical research. Gender perception can thus be understood as a key question of gender medicine that negotiates the operationalization of gender intradisciplinarily. To date, it has failed to produce a homogeneous definition and holds on to paradigms of quantitative knowledge practices, though. Yet the complexity of the category of “gender” demands multilayered approaches that transcend disciplinary boundaries. Overall, the research fields that are situated in knowledge practices, gender perception and the (inter/trans)disciplinary self-perception of gender medicine around the operationalization of sex and gender provide spaces in which gender medicine, feminist science studies, gender studies and others can and must meet.

    Description:
Was also treibt Moden gegenwärtig voran?

Optical fluorescence spectra of anthracene (AN) and of 9,9'-bianthryl (BA) have been measured in the apolar solvent 2-methyl-butane (2MB) at seven different temperatures in the range 123 K to 298 K. The AN spectra are strongly structured and consist of simple Franck–Condon (FC) progressions. The BA spectra on the other hand are broad and show unusual temperature dependencies. These effects are interpreted within a two state model with five vibrational and one torsional degree of freedom. A FC analysis is carried out using vibronic band shape functions which are convolutions of two functions. The first one is a Gaussian representing the spectral broadening due to librations and intermolecular interactions. The second one results from a semiclassical treatment of the intramolecular torsional mode (large amplitude motion, LAM). Optical transitions are assumed to occur from ensembles which are thermally equilibrated with respect to their nuclear degrees of freedom. The Boltzmann distribution with respect to the LAM potentials in combination with a change of the transition frequency as a function of the torsional angle cursive-phi is identified as the predominant broadening mechanism. The LAM potentials in the S0 and S1 state are represented by a three parameter cosine series. A nonlinear least-squares fit of the experimental spectra leads to a single consistent set of model parameters valid for all temperatures. The S1 double minimum LAM potential of BA in 2MB is found to have minima at cursive-phieq=62° (and 118°) and a local barrier at cursive-phi=90° of 255 cm−1.

A new class of photochromic glasses for use in irreversible holographic optical storage applications is described. The recording mechanism involves a triplet-sensitized photoreaction of an organic chromophore. The materials are isotropic and red-sensitive, and exhibit high diffraction efficiencies and long hologram lifetimes. The wavelength sensitivity can be adjusted by the choice of sensitizer; C60, sensitive in the red, is described here. Single digital data page recording and error-free readout are demonstrated at a density of 0.5 Mb/cm2; multiplexing in a 150-μm-thick sample is also demonstrated. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Considerable efforts have recently been made in understanding the magnetic behavior of the rare-earth transition-metal compound Nd2Fe14B, which orders ferromagnetically at Tc=600 K and exhibits a spin-reorientation transition at TSR=135 K. In an effort to obtain direct information on the spin configuration and magnetic ordering in this technologically important compound, we have performed a Nd-145 Mössbauer study on a single crystal of Nd2Fe14B using the 72.5-keV nuclear gamma resonance of Nd-145. The results clearly show that the temperature dependence of the Nd-sublattice magnetization is totally different from that of the macroscopic magnetization, i.e., dropping off far below Tc. The results suggest that the spin-reorientation transition in Nd2Fe14B is driven by an ordering of the Nd sublattice below TSR.

To directly follow the diffusion process of cosmetically relevant agents into human hair, a specific methodological approach is presented and elucidated for selected surfactants. For this, practically relevant anionic and cationic surfactants were synthesized with a chlorine atom at the end of their alkyl chain. The property changes of the surfactants through the modification are corresponding to an extension of the alkyl chain by about two methylene groups, thus representing a moderate increase of hydrophobicity. After the application of a modified surfactant to hair, it can be localized and quantified through its chlorine atom in cross-sections by scanning electron microscopy combined with micro X-ray fluorescence analysis. The determination of the diffusion coefficient D is realized through the application of the Matano-equation to element intensity profiles. Values for D vary within the chosen range of pH and temperature between 10−14 and 10−16 m2 s−1. The diffusion coefficients for the anionic surfactants increase with decreasing pH and increasing temperature, The temperature dependence follows in all cases the Arrhenius relationship with activation energies EA of 50–100 kJ mol−1, which decrease with pH. The pH-related effects, with comparable values for D and EA, are opposite for the cationic surfactant. These observations are consistently interpreted on the basis of ionic and hydrophobic interactions in hair.
