We have come to rely upon this technique very much in the differential diagnosis of lesions of the gastric mucosa. The value of a negative cytology report, we feel, is important in surveying patients with known gastric lesions or in patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms. We have found that the accuracy of a negative cytology report is above 90 per cent. The accuracy of our positive cytology reports is much the same that has been reported in the current literature and is between 80 and 90 per cent. In conclusion, it should be emphasized that these are some of our preliminary experiences. Time, and accumulation of additional data on many patients, will be necessary for full evaluation of the role of gastric exfoliative cytology in the diagnosis of gastric lesions and its true worth as a screening device.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The stoichiometry of the binding partners can be easily deduced from the molecular weight measurement. In many examples of protein complexes, the gas phase-based measurement is consistent with the expected solution phase binding characteristics. This quality suggests the utility of ESI-MS for investigating solution phase molecular interactions. Complexes composed of proteins from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have been studied using ESI-MS. Multiply charged protein dimers from HIV integrase catalytic core (F185K) and HIV protease have been observed. Furthermore, the ternary complex between HIV protease dimer and inhibitor pepstatin A was studied as a function of solution pH. Zinc binding to zinc finger-containing nucleocapsid protein (NCp7) and the NCp7-psi RNA 1:1 stoichiometry complex was also studied by ESI-MS. No protein-RNA complex was observed in the absence of zinc, consistent with the role of the zinc finger motifs for RNA binding. Psychopathology was assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-III-R (SCID). The results showed that chronic low back pain patients (n=90), had much higher rates of psychopathology than did patients in the acute back pain group (n=90), and much higher than general population base rates. In particular, chronic low back pain patients had high rates of major depression, substance abuse, and personality disorders. Moreover, the chronic low back patients also had high rates of premorbid psychopathology. It was concluded that psychopathology is a major concomitant of chronic low pack pain, and that treating the psychological problems, along with the physical aspects of the chronic low back pain may increase the patient's chance of a successful therapeutic outcome.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: "A survey of data-collection and non-response procedures used on surveys conducted as part of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) reveals considerable variation across countries. Of several standard techniques to increase response rates only call-backs were in general use. Leaving letters, books, etc. and interviewers bonuses were utilized in only a bare majority of surveys and an introductory telephone call, the use of converters, and respondent incentives were not used in most surveys. In part, differences in procedures occurred because countries disagreed about their effectiveness. In other cases, techniques were not used simply because countries were not used to these methods." Publication Date: 2023-01-30Description: The often-posed claim that Europe is a pessimistic continent is not unjustified. In 2012, 53 percent of European Union (EU) citizens were pessimistic about their country. Surprisingly, however, societal pessimism has received very little scientific attention. In this article, we examine to what extent political and economic factors drive societal pessimism. In terms of political factors, we expect that supranationalization, political instability, and corruption increase societal pessimism, as they diminish national political power and can inspire collective powerlessness. Economically, we expect that the retrenchment of welfare state provisions and economic decline drive societal pessimism, as these developments contribute to socioeconomic vulnerability. We assess the impact of these political and economic factors on the level of societal pessimism in the EU, both cross-nationally and over time, through multilevel analyses of Eurobarometer data (13 waves between 2006 and 2012 in 23 EU countries). Our findings show that the political factors (changes in government, corruption) primarily explain cross-national differences in societal pessimism, while the macro-economic context (economic growth, unemployment) primarily explains longitudinal trends within countries. These findings demonstrate that, to a large extent, societal pessimism cannot be viewed separately from its political and economic context. Keywords: Politikwissenschaft ; Political science ; societal pessimism; Eurobarometer 66.1 (Sep-Oct 2006); Eurobarometer 68.1 (Sept.-Nov. 2007); Eurobarometer 69.2 (Mar.-May 2008); Eurobarometer 70.1 (Oct.-Nov. 2008); Eurobarometer 71.1 (Jan.-Feb. 2009); Eurobarometer 71.3 (Jun.-Jul. 2009); Eurobarometer 72.4 (Oct.-Nov. 2009); Eurobarometer 73.4 (May 2010); Eurobarometer 74.2 (Nov. 2010); Eurobarometer 75.3 (May 2011); Eurobarometer 76.3 (Nov. 2011); Eurobarometer 77.3 (May 2012); Eurobarometer 78.1 (Nov. 2012) ; Allgemeines, spezielle Theorien und Schulen, Methoden, Entwicklung und Geschichte der Politikwissenschaft ; Basic Research, General Concepts and History of Political Science ; Wirtschaftskrise ; politische Stabilität ; Supranationalität ; Pessimismus ; politische Faktoren ; ökonomische Faktoren ; Korruption ; Mehrebenenanalyse ; Eurobarometer ; EU ; economic crisis ; political stability ; supranationality ; pessimism ; political factors ; microeconomic factors ; corruption ; multi-level analysis ; 10500 ; 10200Type: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: 'Social-science research has been transformed over the last generation by the advent and expansion of the general social surveys (GSS). The GSS model of research has created a infrastructure for the social sciences designed to address the interests and research agenda of scholars and their students; cover a wide range of topics; utilize reliable, valid, and generalizable measurement; and provide data both across nations and across time. This design in turn has generated widespread analysis and notably contributed to our understanding of social processes and societal change.' Publication Date: 2019-08-28Description: "The paper presents German-American research on expressions from response scales used in cross-national and cross-lingual survey research. Respondents in the United States and Germany were asked to rate expression for the degrees of intensity they were held to express. The scales used were scales of agreement, importance and for/against. The findings of the study raise as many questions as they answer. Translation-based pairings of expressions across English and German work well but not perfectly. Symmetrical response scales often lead to artificial-sounding 'scalespeak' constructions: their effect on scale responses is unknown. Well-matched translation pairings were sometimes differently scored across the populations. Germans and Americans differed in the range of scale points they employed and in the range of vocabulary used to 'explain' expressions. The study is seen as a first step towards understanding cross-national response scale issues."
