Si1−xGex films (x=0.22) epitaxially grown by ion beam-sputter deposition on (001) Si substrates were subjected to rapid and conventional thermal annealings at different temperatures. Strain measurements carried out by means of high-resolution x-ray diffraction exhibited strongly nonmonotonous strain dependencies on the annealing time. We observed short-time and long-time relaxation modes with activation energies of 4.6 and 1.3 eV, respectively, and unexpectedly, an additional mode of strain recovery at intermediate time durations with an activation energy of 1.6 eV. This behavior was attributed to processes that involve {113} two-dimensional defects, i.e., agglomerates of interstitials, which were identified by means of transmission electron microscopy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

The phase formation during rapid thermal annealing of a Ti/Mo bilayer sequentially deposited on Si substrates has been studied. The Mo layer varied from 0.5 to 2 nm and the Ti layer was always 60 nm thick. The presence of the Mo interposing layer enhances the formation of the C54 of TiSi2 by first forming a Mo-bearing silicide phase of hexagonal structure. The desired C54 phase then nucleates and grows on top of this Mo-bearing silicide phase at a temperature as low as 650 °C via Si diffusion through the growing silicide layers. This is about 100 °C lower than what is usually needed for the C49–C54 transformation. The significance of this finding is that the usual route for the formation of TiSi2, i.e., the C49 phase forms as a result of the Ti–Si interaction and the C54 phase forms as the product of phase transformation, is altered by the interposition of a thin refractory metal (here Mo) layer between Ti and Si. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Pitted keratolysis is a skin disease characterized by the appearance of pitted lesions on the pressure-bearing areas of the soles of the feet and less often affecting the palms of the hands. A coccofilamentous bacterium is consistently seen in microscopic preparations from the lesions and may be the causative agent of the disease. However, there has been some dispute as to the organism's identity because of the isolation of a number of different micro-organisms, including Streptomyces spp. and a Corynebacterium sp. from previously reported cases. On the basis of histopathological evidence, it has also been suggested that the actinomycete Dermatophilus congolensis might be associated with the condition. In the present study, investigations into the prevalence and laboratory diagnosis of the condition resulted in the isolation of D. congolensis from two cases. The two isolates differed from those usually recovered from cases of dermatophilosis in humans and animals and may represent a hitherto unrecognized biotype of the species.

Abstract The N2O content of waters in the Potomac and Merrimack Rivers was measured on a number of occasions over the period April to July 1977. The concentrations of dissolved N2O exceed those which would apply in equilibrium with air by factors ranging from about 46 in the Potomac to 1.2 in the Merrimack. Highest concentrations of dissolved N2O were associated with sewage discharges from the vicinity of Washington, D.C. and analysis indicates a relatively high yield, 1.3 to 11 percent, for prompt conversion of waste nitrogen to N2O. The yield could be even higher if bubbles originating in sediments should contain as little as 0.3 percent N2O. Measurements of dissolved N2O in fresh water ponds near Boston demonstrate that aquatic systems may provide both strong sources and sinks for atmospheric N2O.

Abstract Twenty stages in the life cycle of Canton-S, a normal strain of Drosophila melanogaster, were investigated for protein content and the activities of choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase, enzymes associated with the metabolism of acetylcholine. The maximum protein content is reached at the prepupal stage. Specific activities of choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase were high in the larval stages and again in the mature fly. The activities of these enzymes expressed on a per fly basis were compared with the activities of other enzymes, previously published by other workers, expressed on the same basis. The developmental pattern of acetylcholinesterase and choline acetyltransferase differed from the patterns exhibited by the other enzymes described earlier. It was possible to relate the different enzyme patterns to known changes occurring in the life cycle of Drosophila melanogaster.

Abstract A patient with pseudomyxoma peritonei secondary to a mucin-secreting adenocarcinoma demonstrated striking, diffuse uptake of 99mTc-MDP throughout the abdomen. The radiopharmaceutical distribution accurately delineated the region of tumor involvement within the peritoneal cavity.

Abstract Cytologic and direct fluorescent antibody techniques were used to detect the presence of Actinomyces israelii and Arachnia propionica in cervicovaginal smears collected from 100 women, 94 of whom did not use intrauterine contraceptive devices. In no case were these organisms found. The possible significance of these results is discussed.
