ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Using the coupled-cluster method we investigate the ground-state properties of an easy-plane spin-one antiferromagnet which has a critical point at zero temperature. This spin system represents a nontrivial system with the single-ion anisotropy. Single-ion anisotropies have a fundamental influence on the behavior of a magnetic system, and prevail in almost all physical systems with spin greater than one half. Because of the complexities caused by the single-ion anisotropy term, the mean-field approximation is commonly used in calculations of the thermodynamic quantities. However, in the mean-field approximation both quantum and spin fluctuation correlations have been neglected. Here we apply the coupled-cluster method to obtain the ground-state energy, staggered magnetization and critical point for both two and three dimensional lattices. In the coupled-cluster method the correlations of the quantum and spin fluctuations have been systematically included.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The main thrust of this work is the application of the open-ended coaxial-line probe technique, which has been used previously for soft biological materials, to low-loss solid samples. Using the instrumentation and procedure presented here, the dielectric constant for low-loss solids can be measured absolutely to ±2%–3% with routine care. The uncertainty can be reduced by about a factor of 2 by averaging several measurements. It is also smaller for liquid samples. This application features the use of relatively simple and readily available microwave components. Also, it is shown that a simple empirical relationship can be used to obtain the bulk dielectric constant from samples of a material in the form of thin slabs. The experimental results which are presented here for kapton, Teflon, Corning glass No. 0211, soda lime glass, magnesium oxide, sapphire, silicon, alumina, and lanthanum aluminate, as well as carbon tetrachloride, compare favorably with existing literature values.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Detailed measurements of the dielectric constant were carried out on a wide range of thicknesses of air samples which were backed by infinitely thick teflon and alumina dielectric media. The measurements were made at room temperature for various (50 Ω) coaxial-line dimensions, microwave frequencies 4–8 GHz, and power levels near a fraction of a mW. The results provide strong support for previously published theoretical calculations based on a boundary value problem which uses a spectral domain formulation for the aperture fields. From thin, planar samples, values of 10.4±0.5 and 25.9±1.3 were obtained at 5 GHz and 300 K for the bulk dielectric constant of MgO and LaAl2O3, respectively. The applicability of a simple empirical model based on an exponential fit is discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

They reflect the fluctuating local magnetic field at the site of the 9Be nuclei. Above about 100 K, there appears a new contribution in addition to the rate observed at lower temperatures. The high temperature contribution is modeled in terms of the thermal excitation of low-lying states of the U3+ ion along lines used by Felton et al. to explain their measurements of the specific heat. Our results indicate a splitting of 200±20 K between the ground and excited states of the system, and a lifetime of 8×10−14 s for the excited states (width =95 K).Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1988Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: An important step in the development and manufacture of the bending magnets for the proposed superconducting supercollider particle accelerator is measurement of the multipole moments of the magnetic field. This paper describes a method for doing so that makes use of the simultaneous pulsed NMR signal from a large number of coils placed on the diameter of a circle. From the value of the magnetic field thereby measured on the boundary, the multipole moments are obtained. Details of the basic concepts of the method are presented, along with some results of an early test of it.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
9Formation of outgrowths at the initial growing stage of YBa2Cu3Ox ultrathin films on ZrO2 substratesStaff View
ISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Ultrathin films of YBa2Cu3Ox with good crystallinity and superconductivity were prepared by a modified off-axis sputtering. The microstructure, with emphasis on surface morphology and formation of outgrowths, was studied by using atomic force microscopy and electron microscopy. It was found that many outgrowths were formed at the initial growing stage. Therefore it is important to suppress the nucleation of outgrowths at a very early growing step to obtain a smooth film. The nucleation of outgrowths is significantly influenced by surface defects on the substrate. Discussion is also made in correlation with the occurrence of an intermediate layer commonly observed onZrO2. From our observation, YBa2Cu3Ox might be grown directly on the surface of ZrO2 without forming any intermediate layer, if the film thickness is very small. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Both the waveguides and the gratings were exposed simultaneously, which effectively eliminate the alignment errors that can be generated during fabrication. A first-order Bragg grating around 1550 nm wavelength was used, and a transmission peak of −27 dB was obtained with a 5 mm long grating length, corresponding to 〉99% reflection. The 3 dB transmission bandwidth was found to be ∼0.8 nm and the 10 dB bandwidth was ∼1.0 nm. Dependence of the Bragg wavelength on electron-beam dosage and waveguide width was also investigated.© 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This polymer has a high refractive index, high sensitivity, large hardness, and Tg〉200 °C. For single-mode channel waveguides with upper claddings, the propagation losses measured were 0.22 and 0.48 dB/cm at 1330 and 1550 nm, respectively. For waveguides without upper claddings, the losses were 0.5 dB/cm at both wavelengths. The stability of these waveguides was also investigated, and no significant change was observed after 200 h at 90 °C and 95% relative humidity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The total and neutral lipid contents were 6.17 ± 0.71 and 2.71 ± 0.42 mg per 100 mg dw, respectively. The content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) was 24.38 ± 2.50 mg/g dw whereas eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) was present at 12.29 ± 2.12 mg/g dw. These two fatty acids were also at the top high percentage among all the fatty acids, with 38.06 ± 0.86% and 17.89 ± 1.24% (w/w) in total lipids and 34.64 ± 2.74% and 20.33 ± 1.05% (w/w) in neutral lipids, respectively. Therefore, green-lipped mussel is a rich source of DHA and EPA, the two n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are beneficial to human health and nutrition.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-4803Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract Highly a-axis oriented epitaxial thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ have been prepared by both a low temperature process and also a self-template technique. Films deposited at low temperature showed good crystallinity whereas films grown on a template exhibited a high transition temperature into the superconducting state. Detailed transmission electron microscopic investigations have been performed on these two kinds ofa-axis oriented films. Significant differences have been found in the microstructures of these films. The dominant defects formed in these films are misoriented grains which mainly show ac-axis orientation. The origin of the nucleation of misoriented grains is attributed to surface defects of the substrate. No boundary between the template layer and upper layer could be distinguished for films made by the self-template process. A thinc-axis intermediate layer with a thickness of 2–5 unit cells was observed at the interface between thea-axis film and the SrTiO3 substrate for both kinds of films. The formation and influence of such an intermediate layer needs further study.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Furthermore, the range of validity of the present solution is clarified, and comparisons are made to some studies on isotropic cylindrical shells. Six E-glass woven fabric-epoxy composite tubes with the same internal radius and different thicknesses and longitudinal lengths were fabricated and subjected to various combinations of external hydrostatic pressure and axial compressive load simultaneously. The normalized buckling stresses were found to agree in general with the theoretical predictions at various biaxial loadings. The buckling envelopes in normalization form provide useful design data on the strength of specially orthotropic composite tubes under a realistic range of biaxial loading conditions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
