RET is representative of the prairie-forest ecotone, containing native tallgrass prairie and oak-hickory forest, but unique in having tracts of replanted prairie, seeded in 1957, that have undergone long-term restoration treatments: burned, grazed, mowed, or untreated. A land-use history database for RET was compiled using a geographic information system to integrate historic and contemporary sources of information. Restoration management on the reseeded prairie has had a profound effect on forest development: mowing or burning precluded forest establishment (〈3% forest cover), whereas portions of untreated or grazed areas became heavily forested (〉97% forest cover). Forest colonization depends upon biotic and edaphic conditions at the time restoration was initiated: for areas replanted to prairie and managed by grazing, forestation was 6% on land in cultivation prior to replanting, 20% on former pastureland, and 98% on land deforested just before replanting. Patterns of forest colonization were also significantly associated with three landscape positions: near existing forest, along water courses, and along ridge tops. Additionally, land-use history analyses showed that the presence of various prairie and forest species resulted from persistence and not from colonization following restoration. Because of the lasting imprint of historic land use on the landscape, our results indicate that it is essential that restoration studies be evaluated within a site-specific historical context.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2648Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Unravelling the unknowns of reflection in classroom teaching Background. The use of reflection in education has emerged as an effective means of connecting theory with practice. However, the literature reveals limited empirical work on the conceptualization of reflection. Aim of the study. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to understand more fully the meaning and use of reflection in teaching, and how reflection contributes to the development of teaching expertise in the classroom. Ethical approval. The study received ethical approval from the Faculty of Nursing Ethical Review Committee, University of Manitoba. Issues related to confidentiality of information, and power relationships between the investigators were addressed. Students were reassured that no data were collected about them during participant observations in the classrooms. Methods. The investigators were the sources of data. Data were collected using five different methods over the course of two academic years, including written autobiographies, critical incident journals, classroom observations, debriefing following classroom observations and research team meetings. Findings. The data were analysed using content analysis, and four themes were identified (i) making connections, (ii) developmental aspects, (iii) influence of context on reflection, and (iv) influence of emotions on reflection. Study limitations. The interpretation of the findings of this study should be used with caution given the qualitative design and small number of participants. Conclusion. Participation in the study increased the awareness of the investigators' personal use of reflection. The process of studying our own use of reflection allowed us to step outside the performance treadmill to better understand, accept and reshape what we do over and over in the classroom. This study supports an examination of one's experiences as a means of understanding reflection and its use in the classroom.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1436-2813Keywords: hepatic function ; hepatic hemodynamics ; liver cirrhosis ; distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS) ; portal hypertensionSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Quantiative measurement is required to define the severity of chronic liver disease and the effects of therapy on its complications. This paper presents a method of such assessment based on measurement of hepatocyte function, liver volume, functional liver blood flow, portal perfusion and cardiac output. Data are presented on 54 patients evaluated prior to, and one year after DSRS for variceal bleeding. Preoperative testing showed that alcoholics (n=24) had significantly (p〈0.05) larger liver and smaller spleen volumes than nonalcoholic cirrhotics (n=22) and patients with portal vein thrombosis (n=8), but that the other parameters were not significantly different by etiologies. At one year after DSRS: all groups showed a significant (p〈0.01) reduction of 41 per cent in spleen size: liver volume was significantly (p〈0.05) reduced in cirrhotics: there was a significantly (p〈0.01) greater loss of portal perfusion in alcoholic cirrhosis: liver blood flow showd a significant (p〈0.05) rise in alcoholics when compared to nonalcoholics and portal vein thrombosis patients: cardiac output ros in alcoholic cirrhosis: hepatocyte function was not significantly different in any group. This study shows that in patients all doing well clinically one year after DSRS, there are markedly different hemodynamic responses. Further studies on cirrhosis aimed at improving therapy for its complications should include some objective, quentitative assessment, first to define the study population, and second to measure the effect of the therapy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1436-2813Keywords: esophageal varix ; distal splenorenal shunt ; total shunt ; pancreatic siphonSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract A prospective randomized trial of selective distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS)versus H-graft interposition total shunt at Emory Hospital in 1971 showed DSRS to be superior to a total shunt in shunt patency, prevention of variceal bleeding, preserving hepatic cell function, preserving the quality of life and patient survival. These results were particularly evident in the non-alcoholic patients. In the alcoholic patients, there was a greater loss of hepatic portal perfusion. In a later phase of the study, it was found that pancreatic veins formed a pathway of collaterals to the shunt, that is a socalled pancreatic siphon. In order to prevent loss of portal and pancreatic flow through the siphon, a total spleno-pancreatic disconnection was developed, whereby the hormone diversion is expected to be diminished.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
