Published 1998Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A remarkably low turn-on field of about 1 V/μm has been observed in electron field emission from planar SiC/Si heterostructures formed by high dose C implantation into Si using a metal vapor vacuum arc ion source. An implant energy of 35 keV was used to a dose of 1.0×1018 ions/cm2 with subsequent annealing in nitrogen at 1200 °C for 2 h. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that a thin surface stoichiometric SiC layer, with a thickness of about 150 nm, had been formed. Atomic force microscopy showed that there are densely distributed small protrusions formed on the surface. The formation of a thin surface stoichiometric SiC layer and the formation of densely distributed small protrusions on the surface are believed to be the two factors responsible for the efficient electron field emission.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1998Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A magnetic force microscope (MFM) was used to image the topography and magnetic microstructures of Co22Ag78 granular films. The observed morphology shows isolated nanometer-scale cobalt particles (granules) embedded in the silver matrix. Stripe magnetic domains with much larger size (typically of ∼100 nm wide) than that of cobalt particles are resolved clearly on MFM micrographs for the annealed samples. It is demonstrated that the domain width and the relative magnetic force strength first increases and then decreases with annealing temperature with a maximum at about 600 K. We suggest that the appearance of the stripe domains is attributed to magnetic correlation among many of the isolated single-domain cobalt particles and is dependent on the microstructure of the samples. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films have been deposited on the Bi4Ti3O12 buffered Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using the metalorganic decomposition technique at annealing temperatures ranging from 600 to 750 °C. No pyrochlore phase was found in the SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films although the Bi2Ti2O7 phase appeared in the Bi4Ti3O12 buffer layers. A SrBi2Ta2O9 film with (200) predominant orientation was formed at 650 °C. The effects of the Bi4Ti3O12 buffer layer and post-annealing temperature on the structure, surface morphology, and electrical properties of SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films were analyzed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Nickel disilicide (NiSi2) layers were synthesized by nickel ion implantation into silicon substrates using a metal vapor vacuum-arc ion source. The electrical transport properties were studied before and after annealing using sheet resistivity and Hall effect measurements from 30 to 400 K, and the results showed surprising features very different from those generally reported NiSi2 layers. The temperature dependence of sheet resistivity Rs(T) and Hall mobility μH(T) in the as-implanted samples showed peculiar peak and valley features varying from sample to sample, depending on the preparation conditions. However, after annealing, the differences between samples seemed to have diminished in that they all showed similar shapes in both the Rs(T) and the μH(T) curves. A two-band model was proposed to explain the observed electrical transport properties. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) ferroelectric thin films were prepared by metalorganic decomposition on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates at annealing temperatures ranging from 600 to 750 °C. The SBT thin films were annealed layer by layer during the spin-coating process using a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) furnace. The relative intensity of (200) peak in x-ray diffraction increased with the increase of the annealing temperature. A (200)-predominant film can be formed at 700 and 750 °C. For the film annealed by RTA furnace at 650 °C, the remanent polarization (2Pr) and coercive field (2Ec) were 19.8 μC/cm2 and 116 kV/cm, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

However, there is limited data on the outcome of therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in patients above 90 years of age with severe acute cholangitis.Aim : To determine the relative frequency of postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography complication in this group of patients. Methods : The postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography complications related outcome of 64 patients aged 90 years and above (Group 1) with severe acute cholangitis were retrospectively compared with 165 patients under the age of 90 years (Group 2).Results : The postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography complication rate was 4.7% (three patients) in Group 1 and 7.3% (12 patients) in Group 2. There was no significant difference in the postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography complication rate between the two groups (P = 0.567). The relative frequency of 30-day mortality was 7.8% (five patients) in Group 1 and 4.2% (seven patients) in Group 2 (P = 0.227).Conclusion : Urgent biliary decompression with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in patients 90 years of age and older with severe acute cholangitis is a safe and effective procedure in the hands of highly skilled endoscopists and is not associated with increased morbidity or mortality even in this group of high risk patients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
