Angularly phase-matched second-harmonic generation efficiencies as high as 1.8×10−3, 2.0×10−4, and 1.2×10−4 W−1 at 1.064, 1.21, and 1.30 μm, respectively, have been measured by using cw Nd:YAG and semiconductor lasers as fundamental sources. Temperature-tuning sensitivities of phase-matched second-harmonic generation have been found to be among the largest ever measured. Values obtained at 1.064, 1.21, and 1.30 μm are −1.2, −1.2, and −1.4 mrad/°C, respectively.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The enhancement comes from a simultaneous availability of a high density of states, thanks to high field localization, and the improvement of effective coherent length near the photonic band edge. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Therefore we compared the results of semiquantitative, point-counting and computer-based methods in the assessement of myocardial fibrosis in a consecutive series of endomyocardial biopsy samples from patients with heart muscle disease. Methods and results: Histological samples (at least three per patient) were obtained by endomyocardial biopsy from 11 patients with focal myocarditis and from 24 ambulatory patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, or during surgery in 10 patients who underwent partial left ventriculectomy. Samples were cut and stained with Masson-trichrome for better contrast. From each sample, a representative field was digitized, and the amount of fibrosis was assessed by semiquantitative scoring, by point-counting, and by computer-based software. Semiquantitative scoring correlated with both point-counting (Spearman's r = 0.69, P 〈 0.0001) and computer-based (Spearman's r = 0.83, P 〈 0.0001) methods. There was also a good correlation between point-counting and computer-based methods (r = 0.71, P 〈 0.0001). However, when compared with the point-counting method, the computer-based method overestimated percent fibrosis by 3.0 ± 6.7% (P = 0.004). This overestimation correlated with the mean percent fibrosis (r = 0.38, P = 0.014).Conclusions: Our data show good correlations between the three methods of myocardial fibrosis assessment. However, systematic differences between them emphasize that this should be taken into consideration when comparing results of the studies using different methods of fibrosis assessment.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-9435Keywords: accessibility ; activity time ; reach ; travel time ; travel time ratioSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Architecture, Civil Engineering, SurveyingNotes: Abstract An important aspect of reach and accessibility is the time people are willing to spend on reaching activity places. In this paper we see the issue of travel time in an alternative way. Instead of looking at travel time separated from time spent on activities, we examine the relation between travel time and stay time. We operationalize this relation with the concept “travel time ratio”. A hypothetical framework underlying these travel time ratios is displayed. We show that for similar types of activity places the value of travel time ratio are in accordance with each other. We find large differences between trips for mandatory activities and trips for discretionary activities. The results indicate the stability of the travel time ratios. Finally, some implications for future research and policy will be mentioned.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-9052Keywords: Affine rules ; efficiency ; Bayes risk ; Brown's identity ; Γ-minimax rulesSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MathematicsNotes: Abstract The problem under consideration is the Γ-minimax estimation, under L2loss, of a multivariate normal mean when the covariance matrix is known. The family Γ of priors is induced by mixing zero mean multivariate normals with covariance matrix τI by nonnegative random variables τ, whose distributions belong to a suitable family G. For a fixed family G, the linear (affine) Γ-minimax rule is compared with the usual Γ-minimax rule in terms of corresponding Γ-minimax risks. It is shown that the linear rule is "good", i.e., the ratio of the risks is close to 1, irrespective of the dimension of the model. We also generalize the above model to the case of nonidentity covariance matrices and show that independence of the dimensionality is lost in this case. Several examples illustrate the behavior of the linear Γ-minimax rule.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
