Half the clones of the originally infected plants were subjected to fungicide treatment to eradicate the endophytes. In an experiment, the clones were planted separately into pots and were either watered adequately or subjected to drought stress. In the genotype collected from a dry site, the endophyte infection reduced plant growth at an adequate water supply, but increased regrowth under drought. In the genotype from a periodically either flooded or dry site, endophyte infection significantly promoted the development of reproductive tillers and seed production (effects which are associated with adaptation to drought). In contrast, the genotype that originated from a wet site showed higher sensitivity to drought stress when endophyte infection was present. The results suggest that environmental conditions in the original habitat of the plants may influence the symbiotic interaction between plant and fungus, probably through natural selection. However, endophyte-induced increases in root dry weight and root/shoot ratio were recorded for all three genotypes. These features could be beneficial for plant persistence, especially on sites where water is the growth-limiting factor.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2005Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2133Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Background Contact allergy to hair dye ingredients is a well-known entity seen both in consumers using hair dyes and among hairdressers with occupational contact dermatitis. Surveys show that consumers with even severe adverse skin reactions to hair dyes only rarely contact the healthcare services. The frequency of hair dye-induced skin reactions in the consumer population is unknown. Objectives An epidemiological investigation with the aim of establishing the proportion of hair dye-induced skin reactions was performed in a population-based sample. Methods A representative random sample (n = 4000) was taken of the Danish adult population. Personal interview questions were asked regarding adverse skin reactions to hair dyes, either compatible with a classical allergic eczematous reaction with redness, scaling and itching or a severe allergic reaction with oedema of the forehead and face. The response rate was 65·2%.Results A total of 18·4% of the male respondents and 74·9% of the female respondents had at some point dyed their hair. The median age at first hair dyeing was 16 years (range 1–80). Adverse skin reactions to hair dyes compatible with an allergic reaction were reported in 5·3% of individuals who had ever used hair dye. Of these, only 15·6% had been in contact with healthcare services after the hair dye reaction. Having had a temporary tattoo was not a significant risk factor for an adverse reaction to hair dyes. Conclusions The rate of adverse allergic skin reactions to hair dyes was higher than expected from patch-test studies. Only by studying the clinical types of adverse reactions to hair dyes will it be possible to gather a complete epidemiological picture of the nature and extent of the problems related to hair dye ingredients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1440Keywords: Cyclosporin ; Conventional immunosuppression ; Long-term renal functionSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary In a prospective randomized trial 50 renal transplant patients (group A) received a sequential course of 14 days conventional immunosuppression (Lymphocytoglobuline (ALG), azathioprine, steroids) and cyclosporin and steroids thereafter, while 50 patients (group B) received the conventional immunosuppression for 7 days followed by cyclosporin and steroids. In the latter group ALG was tolerated for the whole period while in the first group conversion from conventional to cyclosporin A therapy had to be performed after a mean of 11 days, due to ALG intolerance. Actual patient survival rates 1 year posttransplant were 100% in both groups and graft survival rates 96% in group A and 86% in group B (P〈0.05). There was a mean dialysis frequency per patient of 0.7±2.0 in group A and 1.8±3.4 in group B (P=0.064). Serum creatinine 1 year posttransplant was 1.8±0.8 mg/dl in group A and 2.2±1.4 in group B. A total of 58 patients had a serum creatinine of less than 2 mg/dl at the time of conversion to cyclosporin. These patients had a significantly better graft survival rate (98.3%) and serum creatinine 1 year posttransplant (1.6±0.5 mg/dl) than the 40 patients with a serum creatinine of more than 2 mg/dl at the time of conversion (85%; 2.4±1.4 mg/dl), indicating that a delayed onset of cyclosporin therapy might benefit the kidney in the immediate posttransplant period when it is susceptible to nephrotoxicity due to the damage from hypothermic storage.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1433-3023Keywords: Continent nulliparous women ; Holding time difference ; Learning effect of vaginal cones ; Pelvic floor coordination disturbance ; Urinary stress incontinent parous women ; Vaginal cone therapySource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Simultaneous electromyographic (EMG) recordings with intramuscular wire electrodes from the left and right pubococcygeal muscles were performed to elucidate the neurophysiological effect of vaginal cones on the pelvic floor muscles. Ten continent nulliparous women (aged 22–32 years) and 20 stress urinary incontinent parous women (aged 27–60 years, average 2–4 deliveries) were examined before, during holding and after removal of the cone. All the continent nulliparous women could retain the cone in the vagina (mean weight 83.5 g (range 70–85 g). In the incontinent parous group 7 women could not hold any cone, 9 women could hold the 45 g cone, 1 the 32.5 g cone and 3 women the 57.5g cone. There was a significant voluntary holding time difference between continent nulliparous and incontinent parous women. The study reveals that vaginal cones may induce both strengthening of muscles as well as a learning effect leading towards a better coordinated muscle activation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to find out if a particular group of patients with hyperparathyroidism after renal transplantation (HRT) are at risk of developing complications, 14 patients with overt untreated HRT who had at least 1 serum calcium determination ≥ 12 mg/100 ml were evaluated and compared retrospectively with 11 normocalcemic transplant recipients at 6 and 30± 8 months after successful renal allografting. Serum calcium was ≥ 12 mg/100 ml within 6 months of transplantation in 13 of the 14 HRT patients. At 6 months significant differences were found between HRT and controls in mean serum calcium (11.6 versus 9.2 mg/100 ml) and alkaline phosphatase (228 versus 120 U/l). At 30±8 months differences were found in serum calcium (10.2 versus 9.4 mg/100 ml), phosphate (2.8 versus 4.8 mg/100 ml), and alkaline phosphatase (180 versus 88 U/l). Serum creatinine levels were similar in the 2 groups. A significant correlation was found between early and late determinations of alkaline phosphatase when all 25 patients were studied as a single group (r=0.72, p〈0.001). Bone pain and/or radiological evidence of hyperparathyroid bone disease were significantly associated with HRT (8 versus 1 and 7 versus 0, respectively). A higher but not significant incidence of vascular calcifications (5 versus 1) and acute pancreatitis (2 versus 0) was found in HRT. Patients who develop moderate to severe HRT as defined by at least 1 serum calcium determination ≥ 12 mg/100 ml do so within 6 months of renal transplantation, have increased morbidity, particularly involving the skeleton, and might benefit from early subtotal parathyroidectomy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Background: To determine the accuracy and safety of a modified intra-arterial calcium stimulation with the venous sampling test (ASVS) for preoperative localization of insulinomas. Modification included stimulation with a fixed low dose of calcium gluconate, additional stimulation in the distal splenic artery, and no insulin sampling in the left hepatic vein. Methods: In 10 patients showing biochemical evidence of organic hyperinsulinemia, 0.45 mmol of Ca2+ was injected into the gastroduodenal, superior mesenteric, proper hepatic, proximal, and distal splenic arteries during angiography. Insulin levels were measured in samples taken from the right hepatic vein before and 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, and 300 s after Ca2+ injection. Results: Insulin gradients with an increase of more than fourfold indicated direct tumor supply, two- to fourfold correlated with collateral supply, and less than twofold correlated with normal tissue vascularization. ASVS localized all the adenomas of the pancreatic head (n = 3) and body (n = 2) and two of four adenomas of the tail correctly, as confirmed by surgery. Two adenomas of the proximal pancreatic tail were erroneously localized to the body segment, but the fault was rectified by angiography. In one patient with a negative ASVS and without exploration, the diagnosis of an insulinoma was revised. Conclusion: ASVS with a fixed low dose of calcium gluconate is a highly accurate and safe method for preoperative localization of insulinomas. Sampling in the left hepatic vein can be routinely omitted. Additional stimulation in the distal splenic artery seems helpful in surgical decision making, but additional experience is needed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

For the optimal washing of the compounds of the different organ flush solutions, adequate temperature and equilibrium of electrolytes have to be provided. A total of 29 landrace pigs weighing 37.3–5.4 kg were included in this study. According to the model, the left hemipancreas was perfused with Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate (HTK)-solution and autotransplanted after 24 h (G1, n = 13) and 48 h (G2, n = 4) of cold storage (CS). Results were compared with grafts perfused with UW-solution and autotransplanted after 24 h (G3, n = 8) and 48 h (G4, n = 4) CS respectively. Daily measurements of glycemia, glucosuria, amylase and lipase were carried out. HTK perfusion resulted in an increase in wet weight of the grafts after 24 h and 48 h CS (P = 0.031 vs UW). Postoperative glycemia levels in pancreases flushed with HTK-solution were higher after 48 h than after 24 h CS until the 6th postoperative day, when the glycemia returned to normal range (P = 0.02), suggesting a delayed endocrine graft function. The mean IVGTT values attained after full function were comparable in G1 and in G3 (–1.22 ± 0.23 vs. –1.5 ± 0.65). The rises in serum amylase and lipase levels were more pronounced after 48 h CS in both HTK and UW groups, (P = n.s.). Appearance of interstitial and intracellular edema after CS and reperfusion did not influence the function.¶Conclusion: HTK-solution is suitable for 24 h pancreatic preservation in vivo; the perfusion requires at least 4 min for electrolyte equilibration. Long preservation time (48 h) resulted in a transitory DEGF.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
