After testing various percentages of SnF2 incorporated into polycarboxylate, zinc phosphate, and zinc oxide cements, 70% SnF2 polycarboxylate cement was found to have adequate compressive strength while releasing the greatest amount of fluoride in vitro.A 30-day in vivo trial, in which this fluoride cement was used as a temporary intracoronal restoration, produced elevated salivary fluoride levels with only transient elevation in urinary fluoride levels. Plaque scores decreased during the experimental period, suggesting that the released SnF2 affected bacterial growth or attachment. The SnF2-polycarboxylate cement was an adequate temporary restorative material without significant side effects.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Recurrent, feedback excitation by sprouted mossy fibers may contribute to the hyperexcitability observed in human temporal lobe epilepsy. Observations in rodent models of epilepsy mimic the findings in human tissue and reveal that dentate granule cells sprout axons which innervate fibers in their own dendritic layer. However, recent evidence in rodents suggest that these sprouted fibers may form connections which cause inhibition of dentate granule cells, not excitation. Thus, the net effect of sprouting in human epileptic tissue may not only be recurrent excitation. We analyzed paired pulse depression in dentate slices from 9 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and found evidence for strong feedback inhibition. We also noted failure of high frequency stimulation induced inhibition in our human specimens. These data challenge the concept that human epileptic dentate granule cells are excited by recurrent mossy fiber sprouting.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Such devices offer new and exciting opportunities for precision measurements of radioactive isotopes. Here we present experiments performed with a double-MOT system coupled to the on-line separator TISOL at TRIUMF/Vancouver, Canada. For the first time, the Β-decay of free atoms stored in such a device could be observed. We report on coincidence measurements between beta-particles and the argon recoils in the decay of 37K and 38rm{m}}K. The charge state ratios of the recoil-ions were deduced by Time-Of-Flight separation in an acceleration field. A magneto-optical trap (MOT) provides a localized source of atoms suspended in space, so the low-energy recoiling nuclei can freely escape and be detected in coincidence with the β. This allows reconstruction of the neutrino momentum, and the deduction of the β-v correlation in a more direct fashion than previously possible. In addition, the nuclei can be polarized by atomic techniques, opening a new class of spin correlation measurements to test the degree to which parity is maximally violated in the weak interaction. Our present experiment has detected several hundred thousand recoil-β+ coincidences from the 0+ → 0+ pure Fermi decay of 38mK, produced at the on-line isotope separators TISOL and ISAC at TRIUMF. Our goal is to set constraints on non-Standard Model scalar bosons competitive with high-energy colliders and more conventional β-v correlation experiments.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

It was found that considerably higher osmolalities were attained with mannitol than electrolytes before a reduction in the growth rate of the culture was observed. This suggests that mannitol and electrolytes affected the growth rate through different mechanisms. Mannitol uptake was studied with two of the cell lines and both cell lines were found to be permeable to mannitol. This eventually would have eliminated the osmolality gradient between the interior of the cell and the medium, and could explain why higher osmolalities were obtained with mannitol before the growth rate was effected.
