This study aimed to assess the reliability of stereotactic core biopsy in this context and to develop a protocol for the evaluation of stereotactic core biopsy in mammographically detected non-palpable breast lesions. Fifty-one of 52 malignant lesions found by stereotactic core biopsy were confirmed by excision biopsy (one woman declined excision). Nine (4.5%) women had atypical ductal hyperplasia on stereotactic core biopsy; at excision, six were low grade carcinomas (in situ or invasive carcinomas), one was a 3 mm focus of grade 3 invasive duct carcinoma, one was atypical ductal hyperplasia, and one patient refused excision biopsy. In 29 (14.5%) women the histology of the stereotactic core biopsy was considered not to correlate with the radiological abnormality, and excision biopsy was advised: in four of these women carcinomas were found. One hundred and ten (55%) women had 116 benign lesions on stereotactic core biopsy: on follow-up, one of these patients has been found to have a carcinoma. Core biopsy number and sequence were analysed demonstrating that no particular biopsy was more diagnostic than any other, and that the diagnostic yield of three cores was statistically equal to that of five cores. The procedure was well-tolerated and there were few complications. Thus, stereotactic core biopsy is an accurate and safe method for diagnosis of mammographically detected non-palpable breast lesions, and we believe it is the diagnostic technique of choice in breast cancer screening programmes. However, a stereotactic core biopsy diagnosis of atypical ductal hyperplasia requires excision biopsy since a diagnosis of low grade intraduct carcinoma cannot be excluded. Furthermore, if tissue obtained by stereotactic core biopsy does not correlate with the mammographic abnormality, excision biopsy should be performed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: The Fulton-condition factor (K) and per cent whole-body water content were examined to determine whether these indices can estimate the proximate composition of juvenile lake herring Coregonus artedi exposed to a simulated Lake Superior winter over a 225 day laboratory experiment. The K was positively correlated to whole-body crude lipid, crude protein, and gross energy content and negatively correlated to whole-body water content for each sampling period of the experiment (days 75, 150 and 225). In contrast, there was only a weak positive correlation between K and whole-body ash content. While per cent water content was negatively correlated with crude lipid, crude protein and gross energy content for each of the three sampling periods, the correlation between this predictor and ash content was only weakly negative. The indices can be used to accurately estimate temporal changes in proximate composition of juvenile lake herring during winter periods.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Overall, the mean rate of regurgitation for striped bass which contained food contents in their stomach was 8·3%. Striped bass captured by wedging had a higher mean regurgitation rate (17%) than individuals that were either entangled (5%) or gilled (2%). Striped bass caught during the autumn had approximately the same frequency of regurgitation as individuals captured during the summer (10 v. 9%), but these regurgitation rates were higher than those observed for fish during the spring sampling periods (4%). Larger striped bass were more likely to regurgitate their stomach contents than smaller individuals, with the frequency of regurgitation increasing by 0·7% for every 50 mm increase in LT. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of identifying factors that influence regurgitation of stomach contents to minimize and account for biases associated with diet data collected from striped bass captured in gillnets. Using this information, sampling recommendations for food-habit and feeding-rate studies involving the collection of piscivorous fishes using gillnets are made.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Attitudes became more favourable over the 8-week study period. The results indicate that a positive environment is influential in changing the attitudes of student nurses towards the nursing process. These findings lend further support to our original work.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1998Keywords: Bones, dysplasias ; Bones, primary disturbances of growth ; Congenital mal-formationsSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract A new case of the syndrome of “accelerated skeletal maturation, facial dysmorphism, failure to thrive and psychomotor retardation” is presented. The syndrome was noted in the neonatal period. The diagnosis can be readily suggested by the radiologist because ossification centers show exceptionally early maturation. This case history increases to at least five the number of cases so far reported following the initial publication by Marshall and al. in 1971. If the two cases described in 1974 by Weaver and al. (as a distinct entity) are also included then the total of cases reported rises to seven.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-0879Keywords: Urinary infection ; Urinary catheters ; Encrustation ; Bacterial colonisationSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary The surfaces of 32 encrusted urinary catheters were examined by scanning electron microscopy to investigate the association of bacteria with the encrusting deposits. Deposits consisted of struvite crystals surrounded by aggregates of very small crystallites of hydroxyapatite. Underneath these minerals there was a layer of closely packed bacteria. Impressions of bacteria were also observed in hydroxyapatite. Crystals were often engulfed by the bacterial layer, which thus appeared to bind the crystals to each other and to the catheter surface. This thick layer of bacteria associated with crystals may protect both the bacteria from antibiotics and the crystals from acidic bladder washout solutions intended to dissolve them. Furthermore, the existence of this sessile population explains why urease-producing bacteria are not invariably detected in the urine of patients with encrusted catheters. The observation of this bacterial layer (or “biofilm”) by scanning electron microscopy provided direct evidence for infection being implicated in catheter encrustation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

These specimens were subjected to controlled in vitro encrustation conditions. During a test period of 11 weeks, there was no significant difference in the quantities of encrusting deposits formed on the three materials.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1998Keywords: Sort tissue radiography of the neck ; subglottic hemangioma ; croup ; laryngoscopySource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Recent experience indicates that the most accurate and least dangerous method of diagnosing subglottic hemangioma is soft tissue radiography of the neck. We suggest, that the radiologic appearance of subglottic hemangioma is pathognomonic in most cases in young infants. Multiple instrumentation under general anaesthesia be it for diagnostic or follow-up investigation, must be avoided. With conservative approach and in view of the benign natural history of this disease fewer infants should develop severe morbidity and mortality.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
