A CO2 laser whose wavelength is 10.6 μm was selected to avoid effects of the refraction. The Faraday rotation angle along toroidally tangential chords is of the order of one degree. The polarimeter utilizes the frequency-shift heterodyne technique with the use of acousto-optic modulators for high resolution. This polarimeter can be operated with a maximum of three channels. The accuracy of the Faraday rotation angle with a time resolution of 16 ms is about 0.01 deg by digital complex demodulation. We succeeded in performing preliminary measurements of the Faraday rotation angle from LHD plasmas and the values were 10%–30% larger than those estimated with the electron density profiles from interferometry. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The effects of locally induced stress and slight magnetic flux emergence have been examined as possible nucleation centers for effective domain walls which contribute to magnetization. The fundamental phenomena and their origins have been discussed on the bases of experimental facts. It was concluded that these domain refining effects were based upon interactions between subdomains having transverse magnetization, which originate from magnetic free poles and/or internal stress, and tensile stress in silicon steel with orientation near (110)[001]. The features of magnetic properties and domain structures of domain refined grain-oriented silicon steel both for stack and wound cores are described. Finally, a new technique for raising the degree of (110)(001) orientation is introduced, and the approach to minimum loss in grain-oriented silicon steel is discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Domain wall interactions among grains were investigated in relation to the differences in crystal orientation. Several kinds of GO which differed in permeability and iron loss, and GO artifically domain refined were examined. It was shown that an essential factor to obtain lower losses in GO is uniform domain wall movements in each grain. Differences of wall displacement speeds among grains were smaller in GO with orientation near (110) [001] than in GO with orientation deviated from (110) [001]. After artificial domain refining these differences became much smaller, and subsequently much lower losses were obtained in GO with orientation near (110) [001].Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This technique has enabled the individual stroboscopic image, at different phases of drive field, to be observed on a display tube simultaneously, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of core-loss characteristics of the silicon steels magnetized at commercial frequency in practical use. The observation has clearly revealed that uniform displacement of domain walls according to the alternating magnetization at commercial frequency leads to lower core losses during operation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A heterodyne polarimeter which measures the Faraday effect has been under development as a magnetic field sensor for long-pulsed fusion devices. The wavelength of laser beam was chosen to be 850 nm since the radiation-induced loss in optical fibers is significant below 800 nm while the Faraday rotation angle decreases with increasing wavelength. By the use of a distributed Bragg reflector laser diode and a Faraday isolator, excellent stability of phase measurement was attained. The phase resolution was raised to up to 0.02° by the digital complex demodulation and digital bandpass filtering of beat signals. Although the Verdet constant of heavily Tb3+-doped paramagnetic glass is larger than that of ZnSe by about a factor of 1.4, ZnSe is superior to the former in terms of negligible temperature dependence. With a 40-mm-long ZnSe sensing rod, resolutions of the magnetic field strength of about 5 and 2 G were found to be possible with time responses of 1 and 10 ms, respectively. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1985Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Two types of mill glass, one of which is conventional and the other is characterized by its irregular surface morphology and stronger tension, were prepared on the surface of high permeability 3%Si-Fe sheets in order to clarify the effects of the mill glass on core loss and domain structure. The results are twofold. Firstly, the mill glass of the latter type was, by itself, found to reduce the total loss in the induction range of 1.7 T. Secondly, considerable change in magnetization, characterized by its heavily constricted curve occurred, and corresponding change in the domain structure was observed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
