The etch rates of SiC and photoresist depend on the CHF3 concentration in Ar+CHF3 mixture. A maximum value for a ratio of the etch rate of SiC to that of photoresist was found to be 1.29 for 67%Ar+33%CHF3 mixture. Diffraction efficiency of an ion-beam etched grating of 1200 l/mm grooves coated with Au was measured by using synchrotron radiation and the Al kα emission line from an x-ray tube. The diffraction efficiency of the first order was 4.5%–9.3% in the soft x-ray region between 8.34 and 120 A(ring) with a small amount of the higher order and the scattered light components. In addition, it is demonstrated that SiC can be etched in SF6 gas by synchrotron radiation excitation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We have fabricated interface-engineered junctions with YbBa2Cu3Oy as the counterelectrode. The junctions fabricated on YBa2Cu3Oy base electrodes exhibited excellent Josephson characteristics with the 1σ-spread in Ic as low as 5.4% for 16 junctions with an average Ic of around 1 mA. We also confirmed that the 1σ in Ic correlates with the surface morphology of the base-electrode layer, indicating that further improvements in 1σ would be possible by advancing the thin-film growth technology. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2133Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: DNA damage induced by ultraviolet light (UV) can be repaired while cells are arrested in the cell cycle. Tumour suppressor gene p53 has been implicated as being involved in the G1 arrest after UV irradiation. Normal human skin from three volunteers was exposed to UVB and the expression of p53. Ki-67 and retinoblastoma gene product (pRb) was examined immunohistochemically, in addition to observation for sunburn cells, p53 protein started to be expressed at 6 h after UVB irradiation. It peaked at 12–48 h. Ki-67 expression was induced after 48 or 72 h or irradiation. pRb begun to be expressed at 24 or 48 h and peaked at 48–96 h. p53-positive cells were distributed throughout the epidermis, while Ki-67 and pRb positive cells were seen mainly at the lower epidermis. Finally, sunburn cells, which are presumably apoptotic cells, appeared at 24 h and peaked at 24–48 h and were seen at upper epidermis. The different and co-ordinated expression, although variable between individuals, indicates important roles for p53 and pRb on the maintenance of the homeostasis of the epidermis after UV irradiation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2761Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: To determine the distribution of marine birnavirus (MABV) in cultured populations of different marine fish species, 1291 pooled tissue samples from 2672 fish belonging to 22 species and one hybrid were collected from Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, during 1999–2001. Using cell-culture MABV was isolated from three species: yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata Temminck & Schlegel (positive number/sample number, 10/419), amberjack, S. dumerili (Risso) (4/72), and Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck & Schlegel) (41/481). Using PCR on MABV-negative samples, the MABV genome was detected in the same three species [yellowtail (9/409), amberjack (4/68) and Japanese flounder (93/440)] and two additional species, spotted halibut, Verasper variegatus (Temminck & Schlegel) (5/11), and goldstriped amberjack, S. lalandi Valenciennes (1/5). These MABV-positive species can be taxonomically divided into two groups: the genus Seriola and flatfish. In Japanese flounder, MABV was detected during all seasons, and the infection rate was correlated with water temperature. Aquaculture sites with MABV-positive fish were evenly distributed over the surveyed area, suggesting that MABV is widely distributed at aquaculture sites in Kagawa Prefecture. The nucleotide sequence at the variable region, the VP2/NS junction, revealed that the 39th base mutation occurs host-specifically for flatfish. Flatfish are suspected to be the main reservoir of MABV and might be responsible for establishing the infection cycle in aquaculture environments.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
