In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns, ex situ x-ray diffraction, and cross-sectional view transmission electron microscopy electron diffraction patterns confirm the single-crystal growth of Ni2MnGa. The films grow pseudomorphically on the relaxed NiGa interlayer with a tetragonal structure (a=b=5.79 Å and c=6.07 Å). Magnetic measurements using vibrating sample and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometers reveal Ni2MnGa to have an in-plane easy axis and a Curie temperature ∼350 K. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2494Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: The effects of changes from conventional grassland management on fenland in Germany to extensification due to reduced fertilizer inputs and cutting frequency on the microbial colonization in the phyllosphere were investigated. A delay in the first cut for silage and hay, required by a nature conservation programme, was accompanied by the senescence of grasses which significantly influenced certain microbial groups. Heterotrophic bacteria, aerobic and anaerobic spore-formers, as well as filamentous fungi, showed an increase in population densities on the mature herbage of the later cuts. Differences in the rate of fertilizer application and cutting frequency, which had an effect on the dry-matter yield, also influenced the population density of heterotrophic bacteria and, in certain circumstances, that of filamentous fungi. Chemical measures of forage quality were highly correlated with the population density of microbial groups and with the maturity of the herbage. In contrast to these results, the population dynamics of further groups of micro-organisms (yeasts, Micrococcaceae, listeria) did not show any relationship with pasture management.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We studied the THz emission from n-GaAs plasmon emitters modified by low-temperature-grown (LT) GaAs surface layers. The THz emission is increased since the LT GaAs pins the Fermi level at a midgap position, increasing the surface depletion field. For a THz emitter with a 70-nm-thick LT GaAs layer we observe without external fields a THz emission intensity of 140 nW. In addition, the long-term performance of the modified emitters is improved by the LT GaAs surface layer. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2000Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We report on few-cycle terahertz (THz) emission from modulation-doped parabolic quantum wells. The quantum wells are optically excited by near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. The observed THz emission corresponds to the intersubband plasmon of the parabolic quantum well. The emission frequency is independent of the number of optically generated carriers. We identify the excitation mechanism of the intersubband plasmon and hence THz emission to be ultrafast field screening. This mechanism allows for an optically driven THz emission from a completely symmetric nanostructure, in contrast to quantum beats which require a broken symmetry for their excitation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
