Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Fresh surfaces of polycrystalline Al-49.2%Cu, Al, and In are fabricated in duffusion pump oil, and observed in situ using a scanning tunneling microscope. The current images reflect the atomic arrays on their surfaces. More clear images with atomic resolution are observable about 10 h later compared with those just after the fabrication. Atomic resolution images are observable in oil several days after, with increasing noise.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The role of impurities in melting of the charge-ordered (CO) state in half-doped manganese perovskites is discussed based on the systematic study of Cr and Al doping on the CO state as well as on the ferromagnetic–metallic (FM) state. The CO state in Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 is destroyed and the FM state is restored by 2% high-spin (S=3/2) Cr3+, whereas the CO state survives doping of spinless Al3+. On the other hand, the doping effects on the FM state in La1−xSrxMnO3 are almost identical between Cr and Al, except that Cr degrades Curie temperature less. The slight resistance of the CO state against Cr doping can be explained by the magnetic interaction between the Cr and the Mn t2g spins. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Light scattering in a thin film of a mixture of dielectric and magnetic fluids has been studied under both electric and magnetic fields. The film can transmit visible light in no electric field. When an electric field is applied across the film, the transmittance decreases rapidly. The phenomenon is explained by Rayleigh scattering due to the dielectric clusters formed under the field. The decay time to return to the transmittance at no electric field after switching off the field is much larger than the response time after switching on the field; however, the usage of a magnetic as well as an electric field allows the decay time to be shortened.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We demonstrate Nπ (where N is an odd integer) phase retardation between the TE and TM modes in the laser output beam resulting in the phenomenon of counter rotation of the output polarization. A numerical value for the birefringence is estimated.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1987Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The conditions required to achieve bistability in two-mode semiconductor lasers via the nonlinearity associated with gain saturation are discussed. The laser can be switched between the bistable states through coherent or incoherent optical control. Wavelength bistability in such a laser is demonstrated experimentally.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1988Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The relationship between the modulation frequency and maximum modulation depth for stable and low-noise oscillation in external-cavity semiconductor lasers is investigated. Sharp resonances in the threshold for the onset of instability occur when the laser is nearly synchronously modulated. A physical model is proposed to explain these observations.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1987Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Thermally stimulated resonant current peaks are observed in Al0.4Ga0.6As/GaAs triple barrier diodes. These current peaks are interpreted as resonant tunnelings from the first excited electron subband in the first well to the first excited subband and to the second excited subband in the second well. The activation energies for these resonance peaks are measured. The results imply that in the substrate-side well there is a large amount of excess electrons to compensate the positive charge of silicon atoms segregated into the structure during the growth.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1987Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Polarization bistability between the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes is observed in an external cavity semiconductor laser. Hysteresis in the polarization-resolved output power is obtained by controlling the optical feedback power of the TE mode via an intracavity electro-optic modulator. Transitions between single external-cavity frequencies of TE and TM modes are also demonstrated. Nonlinear gain saturation is the origin of this bistability.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We report a technique to characterize carrier-trapping phenomena in SiO2 by measuring the Si 2p core-level energy of Si substrates covered with thin SiO2 layers as a function of x-ray irradiation time. It is found that the Si 2p peak energy, which corresponds to the band bending at the SiO2/Si interface, changes as the x-ray irradiation time increases. We attribute this to carrier-trapping phenomena in SiO2. By using this technique, it is found that the carrier-trapping phenomena differ remarkably among several chemical oxides. We also discuss the atomic structure of the traps that cause the trapping phenomena. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
