ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We derive an analytical expression for the distribution function for high energetic carriers in an arbitrary two- or three-dimensional electric field utilizing Boltzmann's equation. This distribution function is of Maxwell–Boltzmann type if the system attains thermal equilibrium. We apply this new model to calculate the substrate and gate currents in a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor and compare it with measurements from various devices.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Homogeneous injection of holes into the gate oxide of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices was obtained using p-channel MOS transistors under illumination conditions. Because gate hole currents could be measured the dependence of the hole trapping on the oxide electric field and on the energy of the holes at the injection point could be investigated. In contrast to results recently reported for electron injection no evidence for the generation of traps during hole injection was found. Only a small dependence of the capture cross section on the oxide field was observed. The study of the interface state generation during hole injection at various fields revealed that the amount of interface states directly generated by the injected holes is less than 5% of the number of trapped holes. For longer times a transformation process occurs and a correlation is found between the detrapping of holes and the generation of interface states.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1559-1816Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: PsychologyNotes: The current study examines people's perceptions of a male anabolic steroid (AS) user. Differences in perceptions on the Steroid Perception Questionnaire (SPQ; Schwerin & Corcoran, 1992) were measured. Subjects (N= 399) received 1 of 5 slide presentations: an athletically active individual, a drug-free, an AS-using, a cocaine-using, and a cheating bodybuilder. Results show the AS-using protagonist significantly different (more negatively rated) than his drug-free counterparts and similar to the cocaine-using bodybuilder (p 〈 .05). Differences among presentation protagonists on SPQ dimensions and comparisons to the Schwerin and Corcoran (1992) written-mode findings are examined further.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1559-1816Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: PsychologyNotes: Anabolic steroids are an attractive and apparently effective class of drugs which builds muscle mass, strength, aggressiveness, and confidence. Given cultural norms for male physical attractiveness, psychosocial effects have been deemed important in understanding steroid use. As a result, the present study focused on the perceptions that others have of anabolic steroid users. A written description was given to subjects to read. After reading the person description, subjects rated the story protagonist on an 18-item questionnaire. Differences among person descriptions on each item were examined. Analyses indicate that: a) subjects view the bodybuilding steroid-user significantly more negatively than the diet conscious bodybuilder or an athletically active individual, and b) subjects view a cocaine-using bodybuilder and a steroid-using bodybuilder similarly. Implications of these findings are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-8889Keywords: Rhagoletis pomonella ; learning ; oviposition ; vision ; odorSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract Females of the apple maggot fly,Rhagoletis pomonella, were allowed for 3 days to alight upon and oviposit in green or red 18- to 20-mm hawthorn host fruit (Crategus mollis) or green or red 45- to 55-mm apple host fruit (Malus pumila) hung from branches of potted host trees in field enclosures. Subsequently, when females were released individually on potted host trees harboring fruit of one of these types, their ability to find fruit of unfamiliar size proved unaffected by prior experience with fruit but their ability to find fruit of unfamiliar color was significantly affected. Specifically, females exposed to red hawthorns or red apples were less able to find green hawthorns or green apples than were females experienced with either of the latter fruit types. Fruit odor was found to have no effect on female ability to find familiar compared with unfamiliar green fruit. In contrast, a difference in size (or surface chemistry) between familiar and unfamiliar fruit but not a difference in fruit color had a significant negative influence on the propensity of alighting females to bore into unfamiliar fruit. Three bouts of experience with alighting upon and ovipositing into fruit over a period of about 1 h had no detectable effect on female ability to find unfamiliar fruit but did reduce propensity to bore into unfamiliar fruit. Our findings are discussed in relation to insect ability to learn visual and chemical stimuli of resources and insect propensity to form host races. We also discuss the potential impact of our findings on nonpesticidal, behavioral methods of managingR. pomonella in commercial apple orchards.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The STAT transcription factors form a family of signal transducers and activators of transcription. We sequenced the bovine STAT5B cDNA and both STAT5-encoding genes, STAT5A and STAT5B, representing the first complete description of any STAT5-encoding gene. DNA fiber FISH hybridization revealed that the genes reside only 40 kbp apart on BTA19. Both genes are segmented into 19 exons and all but two of the homologous exons are of equal size. The genes harbor a central block of nearly identical DNA sequence (97.5% sequence identity over 3373 bp), spanning from intron 5 to intron 9. Isolation and sequencing of the homologous segments from mouse revealed the same unusually high degree of intronic sequence conservation in these segments of the murine STAT5-encoding genes. However, the respective sequences are completely divergent between the two species. A comparison of the inter- and intragenic cDNA sequence preservation at nonsynonymous sites reveals that the DNA-binding domain is under the strongest selection pressure for both intergenic and factor-specific intragenic sequence preservation. The so-called ``SH3'' segment of the linker domain, in contrast, shows species-specific sequence identity in all but one amino acid residues in both factors, in cattle, human, and mouse. This indicates that the same species-specific selection pressure occurs on the linker domain from both factors, STAT5A and STAT5B. Thus, the comparison of evolutionary selection pressures resting on various domains suggests that the DNA-binding domain might contribute to differential DNA binding of STAT5A and STAT5B factors, while both might interact equally well with other cellular factors through a segment of the linker domain.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The mapping strategy for the bovine genome described in this paper uses large insert clones as a tool for physical mapping and as a source of highly polymorphic microsatellites for genetic typing, and was one objective of the BovMap Project funded by the European Union (UE). Eight-three cosmid and phage clones were characterized and used to physically anchor the linkage groups defining all the bovine autosomes and the X Chromosome (Chr). By combining physical and genetic mapping, clones described in this paper have led to the identification of the linkage groups corresponding to Chr 9, 12, 16, and 25. In addition, anchored loci from this study were used to orient the linkage groups corresponding to Chr 3, 7, 8, 9, 13, 16, 18, 19, and 28 as identified in previously published maps. Comparison of the estimated size of the physical and linkage maps suggests that the genetic length of the bovine genome may be around 4000 cM.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
