Published 1976Staff ViewISSN: 1365-3091Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: In Sicily, Messinian evaporitic sedimentary deposits are developed under a wide variety of hypersaline conditions and in environments ranging from continental margin (subaerial), to basin-margin supratidal, to intertidal, to subtidal and out into the hypersaline basin proper. The actual water depth at the time of deposition is indeterminate; however, relative terms such as ‘wave base’ and ‘photic zone’ are utilized. The inter-fingering relationships of specific evaporitic facies having clear and recognizable physical characteristics are presented. These include sub-aerial deposits of nodular calcium sulphate formed displacively within clastic sediments; gypsiferous rudites, arenites and arenitic marls, all of which are reworked sediments and are mixed in varying degrees with other clastic materials (subaerial, supratidal, and intertidal to deep basinal deposits). Laminated calcium sulphate alternating with very thin carbonate interlaminae and having two different aspects; one being even and continuous and the other of a wavy, irregular appearance (subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal deposits). Nodular calcium sulphate beds, usually associated with wavy, irregular laminated beds (supratidal, sabkha deposits); very coarsely crystalline gypsum beds (selenite), associated with more even, laminated beds (subaqueous, intertidal to subtidal deposits); wavy anastomozing gypsum beds, composed of very fine, often broken crystals (subaqueous, current-swept deposits); halite having hopper and chevron structures (supratidal to intertidal); and halite, potash salts, etc. having continuous laminated structure (subaqueous, possibly basinal).Evidence for diagenetic changes is observed in the calcium sulphate deposits which apparently formed by tectonic stress and also by migrating hypersaline waters. These observations suggest that the common, massive form of alabastrine gypsum (or anhydrite, in the subsurface) may not always be ascribed to original depositional features, to syndiagenesis or to early diagenesis but may be the result of late diagenesis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1399-3054Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: In higher plants one of the important functions of the leaf epidermis is the effective screening of ultraviolet-B (280–320 nm, UV-B) radiation, due mostly to phenolic compounds. The assessment of the contribution of this function is necessary for an evaluation of the impact of increasing UV-B radiation. A method is proposed to estimate epidermal transmittance on the basis of chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Fluorescence of chlorophyll induced by UV-A (320–400 nm, measuring beam centered at 366 nm, half band width 32 nm) or UV-B (measuring beam centered at 314 nm, half band width 18 nm) is compared to that induced by a blue-green measuring light (475 nm, half band width 140 nm). It is shown that the ratios of UV-and blue-green (BG)-induced fluorescence, F(UV-A)/F(BG) and F(UV-B)/F(BG), are relatively constant among leaf samples of various species (Vicia faba, Spinacia oleracea, Rumex scutatus) from which the epidermis was removed. In epidermis-free leaves no significant differences were found between adaxial and abaxial leaf sides, suggesting that leaf structure has negligible influence on the F(UV)/F(BG) ratios. On the other hand, fluorescence excitation ratios varied over a vast range when intact leaves from different species and habitats were investigated. Ratios were low in sun leaves and relatively high in shade- and greenhouse-grown leaves. By relating these results to those obtained with epidermis-free leaves, epidermal transmittances for UV-B radiation could be estimated, with values ranging between 1 and 45%. The data demonstrate a large adaptability of epidermal UV-A and UV-B transmittance in higher plants. The proposed method may prove a versatile and relatively simple tool for investigating epidermal UV transmittance complementing established methods.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The apparent molal enthalpy equations of Pitzer were then fit to the resulting ΔH D data and the parameters for these equations are presented. The heat of dilution data for CdCl2 and CuCl2 were in good agreement with results by other workers.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-2614Keywords: Equipment ; alarms ; MonitoringSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Computer ScienceMedicineNotes: Abstract The administration of anesthesia may be viewed as a closed-loop control system consisting of three major components: the anesthesia system, the patient, and the system operator. A monitoring and alarm system during anesthesia should not be limited to only one of the three major components but must include monitoring of the patient, the performance of the anesthesia system, and the action of the system operator. For an alarm system to be successful when an adverse condition occurs, an alarm must be generated and identified, the problem identified and corrected, and the patient stabilized before injury results. The authors describe the characteristics of a structured alarm system that maximizes the time available to correct a potential problem before injury begins, that clearly identifies the cause of the problem, and that prioritizes alarms according to the urgency of the required response. Alarms should be easy to temporarily silence, have built-in alarm default settings to prevent the inadvertant use of settings meant for a previous patient, and have a graphic display that enables the operator to detect problems or trends before an alarm sounds.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
