Published 2001Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: An all-perovskite-oxide transistor composed of a tetragonal perovskite PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 (ferroelectric) and a layered perovskite Bi2Sr2CuO6 (conducting channel) is fabricated on a cubic perovskite Nb-doped SrTiO3 (gate electrode). We demonstrate a considerably large conductance modulation of Bi2Sr2CuO6 by varying the direction and magnitude of the polarization. The ratio of the ON- and OFF-state drain currents reaches 196. A memory retention time as long as about 8 h is also observed. The drain current versus the drain voltage curves analyzed by adopting a semiconductor model give fairly good agreement with the measurement data. We also discuss the advantages and future prospects of all-perovskite-oxide transistors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Here we quantified multiple oxidized bases in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA of frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes and cerebellum from short postmortem interval AD brain and age-matched control subjects using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry with selective ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM) and stable labeled internal standards. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA were extracted from eight AD and eight age-matched control subjects. We found that levels of multiple oxidized bases in AD brain specimens were significantly (p 〈 0.05) higher in frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes compared to control subjects and that mitochondrial DNA had approximately 10-fold higher levels of oxidized bases than nuclear DNA. These data are consistent with higher levels of oxidative stress in mitochondria. Eight-hydroxyguanine, a widely studied biomarker of DNA damage, was approximately 10-fold higher than other oxidized base adducts in both AD and control subjects. DNA from temporal lobe showed the most oxidative damage, whereas cerebellum was only slightly affected in AD brains. These results suggest that oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA may contribute to the neurodegeneration of AD.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The ferroelectric (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 optical waveguiding thin films have been prepared on MgO coated (100)LiF substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray θ-2θ scans revealed that the films are single-phase pseudocubic perovskite and highly 〈100〉 textured. The surface chemical composition of the as-grown films was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The ferroelectric properties of the films as grown on Pt/Ti coated silicon were demonstrated by using a modified Sawyer–Tower circuit, and the optical waveguiding properties of the films were characterized by using a rutile prism coupling method. The as-grown films have an average transmittance of 75% in the wavelength range of 400–2000 nm and a refractive index of 2.2 at 632.8 nm close to the bulk PLZT. The distinct m lines of the guided TM and TE modes of the films as grown on MgO coated LiF substrates have been observed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The morphologies of the LiNbO3 wafer gratings were studied with an atomic force microscope as well as an optical microscope. The crystal structures of the gratings were characterized by x-ray diffraction and three new crystal phases were found at the gratings' surface besides the substrate phase of LN (110). © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Thin films of Lanthanum titanate have been prepared on SiO2 coated Si and fused silica substrates by excimer ultraviolet laser ablation of potassium lanthanum titanate ceramics (K2La2Ti3O10). X-ray θ–2θ scans revealed that the films as-grown at a substrate temperature of 750–850 °C were single phase defective perovskite, and exhibited superstructure line in addition to the lines expected for the foundamenal perovskite structure. The films can be produced by escaping of potassium from K2La2Ti3O10 and the superstructure line observed was considered to arise from the ordered arrangement of the A-site vacancies. The chemical compositions of the films were determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Optical waveguiding properties were demonstrated by m-line measurement using a rutile prism coupling method. The as grown films are colorless and transparent, and have the effective refractive index of 1.917 for TE modes at 632.8 nm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

All samples showed increases in gelling capacity during storage, corresponding to oxidative changes in proteins (carbonyls, hydrophobicity). Emulsifying activity of surimi, however, did not change during storage. No major differences were found between washing conditions, but propyl gallate-washed surimi tended to have the least oxidation and least increase in gel elasticity. Overall, frozen storage not only preserved the shelf life but also enhanced gelation of beef-heart surimi washed with these solutions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Surimi samples were stored at 2 8C and analyzed periodically for protein oxidation, emulsifying properties, and dynamic gelling characteristics. Degree of oxidation differed among washing treatments. Addition of propyl gallate and sodium tripolyphosphate inhibited lipid oxidation but did not prevent protein oxidation. Gel elasticity increased and emulsifying activity decreased for all surimi samples during storage, coinciding with myosin aggregation. Modification of beef heart surimi functionality can be achieved through different washing processes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
