Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were dispersed in 2-butanol and dropped onto a V-ridge, lithographically patterned Si substrate that was coated with a thin layer of gold. These MWNTs were shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to conform to the V-ridge surface topology at room temperature, which is thus useful for introducing kinks (at the apex of the V-ridge and the bottom of the trenches between V ridges). The substrate-supported MWNTs were then heated in air at temperatures from 673 to 1173 K for varying exposure times and were monitored with SEM. A 122 kJ mol−1 activation energy for complete oxidation was obtained, and preferential oxidation at kink sites was observed on some MWNTs at high temperatures. The dominant mode of oxidation was either thinning of the walls of the MWNTs or sequential oxidation of the component tubes in bundles. Some MWNTs, which at room temperature conformed to the V-ridge surface topology, detached ("sprang" away) from the substrate surface, demonstrating that the MWNTs are under tensile stress, but are held to the surface by van der Waals attractive forces, which can be overcome by exposure to higher temperatures. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

In this letter, the bulk modulus of an individual C60 molecule is calculated in terms of the C,C bond force constant. A range of values for the bulk modulus is obtained with literature values for the force constant. The values obtained all exceed the bulk modulus (441 GPa) of diamond. With a C,C bond force constant equal to that between adjacent carbon atoms in graphite, 7.08 mdyn/A(ring), a bulk modulus of 903 GPa is obtained. On the basis of a simple composite model it is calculated that single closest-packed C60 crystals of C60 will have a bulk modulus of roughly 668 GPa under hydrostatic pressures. The calculated bulk modulus for a single C60 "buckyball'' therefore suggests the possibility that a C60 crystal could be the most incompressible material known, at a pressure above about 50 GPa.

Patterning of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was demonstrated by oxygen plasma etching of lithographically patterned substrates. Periodic arrays of islands, or holes of several microns on an edge, were obtained on freshly cleaved HOPG surfaces which had been prepared with SiO2 mask stops and then oxygen plasma etched. The etching process is described, including a study of etch rate as a function of rf power, and morphology was characterized with scanning electron microscopy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Occipital dysplasia was found in association with cervical spinal cord abnormalities in two dogs. One dog presented for tetraparesis and cervical hyperesthesia, the other for historical cervical hyperesthesia and mild paraparesis. In dog 1, a midline cervical spinal cord defect consistent with a communicating syrinx was found. In the other dog, a presumptive syringo/hydromyelia of the cervical spinal cord was found on magnetic resonance imaging. While occipital dysplasia alone is not thought to cause any clinical abnormalities, the dogs of this report suggest that intramedullary central nervous system abnormalities may be present concurrently with occipital dysplasia and should be considered as a possible cause of the clinical signs. The relationship between occipital dysplasia and syringo/hydromyelia in these dogs remains unclear, however, similar associated abnormalities are occasionally found in humans with Chiari malformation.

: Cutaneous calcium deposition can occur in long-term inflammation. The deposition of calcium in long-standing acne may produce either small pigmented nodules or no visible lesions. The former type is much less common, with the nodules containing particulate spheres of mineral which probably represent true osteomas. Both types of calcification can be demonstrated roentgenographically and may occur in as many as half of all cases of severe long-standing acne.

Rotationally resolved infrared laser induced fluorescence spectra are presented for dimethyl ether and methyl formate. Q branch spectra are presented for 1,4-dioxane, methyl formate, and dimethyl carbonate. It has been demonstrated earlier that all of these states intramolecularly vibrationally relax. Lower limits on the lifetime of this process are inferred from the present data. For methyl formate and dimethyl ether the J=1 and 2 states have linewidths 〈0.31 cm−1. This sets a lower limits on the lifetime of 15 ps, although for the limited number of coupled states an exponential decay is not expected. This is also the lower limit for relaxation in the higher J=20 states of 1,4-dioxane and methyl formate, for which exponential decays probably do occur. Dimethyl carbonate relaxes in greater than 10 ps. All measurements were performed in a pulsed supersonic beam with a infrared optical parametric oscillator.

    Notes:
The Bacillus cereus cnp gene coding for the thermolysin-like neutral protease (TNP) has been cloned, sequenced, and expressed in Bacillus subtilis. The protease is first produced as a pre-pro-protein (Mr= 61000); the pro-peptide is approximately two-thirds of the size of the mature protein. The pro-sequence has been compared with those of six other TNPs, and significant homologies have been found. Additionally, the TNP pro-sequences are shown to be homologous to the pro-sequence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa elastase. A mutant has been constructed from cnp, in which 23 amino acids upstream from the pro-protein processing site have been deleted. This region has no homologous analogue in any of the other TNP pro-sequences. The detection results in a delay of six to eight hours in detection of active protease in the growth medium, as well as a 75% decrease in maximum protease production. N-terminal analysis of the mutant mature protein demonstrates that the processing site is unaltered by the pro-sequence deletion. The deletion must, therefore, modulate the kinetics of processing and/or secretion of the pro-protein.

    Notes:
Using deletion mutants, It is shown that part of the prosequence, the Ω-peptide (-4, -24), of the thermolysin-like neutral protease (TNP) from Bacillus cereus, Cnp, is not required for efficient processing and secretion of fully functional mature protease. It is demonstrated that the rate and selectivity of pro-protein processing is dependent on both the flexibility and primary sequence of the processing site. Processing is found to be particularly sensitive to the nature of the amino acid three residues upstream from the site of cleavage. A consensus sequence for TNP pro-protein processing has been identified, which provides further Insights. Finally, a larger deletion of a portion of the Cnp prosequence upstream from the Ω-peptide that includes amino acids conserved among TNPs reduces the rate of processing and secretion of Cnp and results in the accumulation of export-incompetent pre-proprotein in the cell fraction.

: Ground water and surface water constitute a single dynamic system in most parts of the Suwannee River basin due to the presence of karst features that facilitate the interaction between the surface and subsurface. Low radon-222 concentrations (below background levels) and enriched amounts of oxygen-18 and deuterium in ground water indicate mixing with surface water in parts of the basin. Comparison of surface water and regional ground water flow patterns indicate that boundaries for ground water basins typically do not coincide with surface water drainage subbasins. There are several areas in the basin where ground water flow that originates outside of the Suwannee River basin crosses surface water basin boundaries during both low-flow and high-flow conditions. In a study area adjacent to the Suwannee River that consists predominantly of agricultural land use, 18 wells tapping the Upper Floridan aquifer and 7 springs were sampled three times during 1990 through 1994 for major dissolved inorganic constituents, trace elements, and nutrients. During a period of above normal rainfall that resulted in high river stage and high ground water levels in 1991, the combination of increased amounts of dissolved organic carbon and decreased levels of dissolved oxygen in ground water created conditions favorable for the natural reduction of nitrate by denitrification reactions in the aquifer. As a result, less nitrate was discharged by ground water to the Suwannee River.

Cervical vertebral fusion was noted radiographically in four dogs presented for signs of cervical spinal cord compression. Ventral extradural spinal cord compression was seen on myelography at intervertebral disc spaces adjacent to the fused vertebrae in two dogs and at a site removed in two dogs. At surgery, no intervertebral disc space was found in the area of fusion. No other instances of cervical vertebral fusion were identified in reviewing radiographs of 1225 other dogs with cervical intervertebral disc extrusion evaluated at our hospital. Clinical signs resolved in all dogs after surgical removal of extruded intervertebral disc material. Information from these four dogs suggest vertebral fusion may predispose adjacent discs to herniation.

A 42-year-old man presented with painful toenails which were overcurved transversely and onycholytic. Examination revealed that all toenails, the thumbs and index fingers were similarly affected. In addition, he had a small area of leukokeratosis in the mouth, epidermal cysts of the scrotal skin and a small area of hyperkeratosis on the ulnar borders of his hands. His characteristic nail changes began in the great toenails at the age of 20 years. After renal transplantation at age 39, the other nails changed and he developed the features described above. His sister has overcurvature of the fifth toenails. A diagnosis of pachyonychia congenita tarda was made. His case is compared with 14 other reported cases of this rare syndrome.
