Abstract The major phytotoxins in acid soils are aluminium and manganese. Tolerances to Al and to excessive Mn are independently inherited and Al and Mn solubilities in soils vary. In this work, the response of pasture grasses and legumes to soil acidity was studied on three soils with different Al and Mn concentrations. One provides moderate concentrations of Al with little Mn; one provides high concentrations of both Al and Mn and another provides a very high concentration of Mn at relatively low concentrations of Al. The response of a plant cultivar to changes in the soil acidity induced by lime or acid additions reflects the degree of Al and/or Mn stress provided by a particular soil, and the ability of the cultivar to tolerate those stresses. Examples are given of the way cultivars with different tolerances to Al and Mn toxicity respond to changes in acidity on the soils with different Al and Mn solubility characteristics. The utility of this screening technique to define the tolerance of cultivars to acidity on classically different soils is highlighted.

Abstract: We have studied the ionization of Rydberg-excited xenon atoms in THz-laser fields and by quantum dynamical calculations. The experimental threshold laser field strength for 10% ionization probability follows an n*-1.68 ( 1.04 THz) dependence (n* effective principal quantum number) with additional weak resonance structures and shows that ionization does not occur by a Landau-Zener mechanism. At scaled frequencies of to 5.6 the simulated threshold fields for ionization in oscillatory fields show a dependence on the principal quantum number n of n-4.1 to n-1.35.

The goal of this work was to characterize the adsorption of Bacillus subtills α-amylase onto crystalline starchy materials of the B-type polymorph. Monodisperse spherulitic particles (R ż6; 5.0 μm), essentially resistant to α-amylolysis at 25°C were prepared from short amylose chains (DPn ≈ 15). The α-amylase adsorbed specifically onto the spherulites, and adsorption was found to be a prerequisite step for hydrolysis. Adsorption was inhibited by the presence of maltose and maltotriose in the reaction mixture. Adsorption isotherm of the enzyme on the particles showed a well developed plateau of 1.62 μg/cm2 at 25°C corresponding to a monolayer adsorption process. The binding free energy calculated from the initial slope of the isotherm was ΔG ≈ -20.7 kJ/mol. This is smaller than published values for the binding of α-amylase to soluble amylosic chains (ΔG 〈 -30 kJ/mol).

    Notes:
We have used a combination of techniques to study the structure and properties of C-type starch from pea seeds. It was found that all C-type starch granules contain both types of polymorph; the B polymorphs are in the center of the granule and are surrounded by the A polymorphs. During heating in excess salt solution the A and B polymorphs within C-type granules melt independently, giving a double transition in heat capacity and a two-step swelling, compared with single transitions for A- and B-type starches. It was shown that B polymorphs gave a transition with a lower peak temperature than A. The disruption of crystallinity during gelatinization began from the hilum area and was propagated along the granule, accompanied by swelling of disrupted areas. It is proposed that the swelling of disrupted parts of the granule decreases the melting temperature of the neighboring crystallites resulting in the progressive disruption of crystalline areas. The gelatinization process is dependent on the arrangement of A and B polymorphs within the granule. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biopoly 45: 323-332, 1998
