Abstract The anodic acetoxylation of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene in a methylene chloride/water emulsion and using a phase transfer catalyst to supply the acetate ion to the organic medium is discussed. The yield of 2,5-dimethoxyphenylacetate is shown to vary with the electrolysis conditions but this product can be obtained with an organic yield of 85% and current yield, 60%. Similar conditions are used to introduce other carboxylates; with the longer chain, branched chain and unsaturated acids the yields of the esters are good. Finally the acetoxylation of some other aromatic molecules is shown to lead to variable yields of the acetates.

Abstract The anodic cyanation of naphthalene in a methylene chloride/water emulsion using a phase transfer catalyst to supply cyanide ions to the organic medium has been re-examined. The effect of electrolysis parameters (e.g., current density, electrode material, concentration of cyanide, naphthalene and phase transfer catalyst) on the current and organic yields of products is reported. It is shown that by correct selection of conditions it is possible to improve substantially on the yields reported in the literature; the organic and current yields of 1-cyanonaphthalene can exceed 80% and 65%, respectively.

Abstract The recent literature dealing with the redox mechanism of the lead-acid cell positive electrode is reviewed. The basis electrochemistry of lead dioxide in its various polymorphic modifications and states of subdivision is considered in relation to the important aspects of electrode technology of which the major industrial application of the material is the conventional lead-acid cell. The proposed mechanism of the reduction (discharge) of lead dioxide in various acidic solutions are considered in relation to the present state of electrode kinetic theory. The reverse reaction by which lead dioxide is formed and the parasitic intrusion of the self discharge are dealt with as a precursor to the total cyclic process. It is concluded that in a number of respects the mechanisms proposed do not adequately represent the totality of the experimental observations. Such shortcomings are emphasized and extensions to present research are proposed.

Abstract The anodic chlorination of naphthalene in a water/methylene chloride emulsion and using tetrabutylammonium ion as the phase transfer catalyst is demonstrated; in conditions where the aqueous phase is saturated NaCl, the organic yield of 1-chloronaphthalene is 56% and the current yield is 33% after the passage of 2.33 F mol−1 of naphthalene. It is shown, however, that when the aqueous phase also contains zinc chloride so that the species transferred is [(C4H9)4N+]2ZnCl 4 −− , the yields can be increased to 92% and 49% respectively. The mechanism of these chlorinations is discussed.

Summary Human interface technology is a new science which must be understood by all surgeons in order to cope with the ever-increasing complexity of surgical practice. This science is the understanding of how humans comprehend, interact, and use the world around them. The increasing use of robotics, computers, and virtual reality depend upon this technology to create a “user-friendly” environment to be able to assimilate the massive amount of data and images and to “naturally” interact with machines and computers. Through careful implementation, more complex systems will become easier to use and enhance the surgeon—the technology must adapt to the surgeon, not the reverse.

The type of surface of the perforated plate influences the performance of a perforated-plate column. Pilot plant data on a 4-in column for the system toluenediethylamine-water at 20°C. show that when the water phase is dispersed and the direction of mass transfer is from the continuous toluene to the dispersed water phase polyethylene plates give a continuous stream of droplets and a higher efficiency, but that when the direction of mass transfer is from the dispersed water to the continuous toluene phase the metal plates give the higher efficiency.
