The affinity-chromatographically purified IBS was used. IBS is a heat-, alkali- and acid-stable glucopeptide which is characterized by non-specific immunoglobulin binding lo the Fab fragment. The purified IBS consists of three polymer homologues whose molecular weights are 12–14,000, 25–30,000 and more than 150,000 Da. IBS did not stimulate DNA synthesis by murine T cells, macrophages or plasma cells whereas it did stimulate that by mature B cells without any help from T cells or macrophages, IBS also stimulated both in vitro IgG production by spleen cells and in vitro sensitization of spleen cells by sheep red cells (SRBC). IBS was found to stimulate DNA synthesis by B cells mediated by binding to surface immunoglobulins of B cells. IBS is thought to be a useful amplifier for inducing human hybridomas and a valuable tool for examining mature B cells, both diagnostically and experimentally.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-3916Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Forty-one hips in 38 elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the hips, operated on with joint preserving techniques at the age of 55 years or more, were analyzed clinically radiologically. Bilateral involvement was seen in 13 cases. Ten hips were operated on after this study, before the patients were 55 years old, or no operation has yet been done. The average age at operation was 59 years, and the average preoperative hip scores (Merle d'Aubigné) were as follows: pain 2.8; range of motion (ROM) 4.4; gait 3.4. Average preoperative hip flexion and abduction were 88° and 20° respectively. Mean follow-up period was 57 months, and mean final hip scores were: pain 5.1; ROM 4.6; gait 4.0. Significant improvement was seen in pain and gait scores but no improvement in ROM scores. Excellent and good scores were achieved in half of the cases. Failure was seen in four cases. Hip pain recurred in nine patients. Five out of these patients were classified as atrophic according to Bombelli's classification of osteoblastic response of osteoarthritis of the hip. The responsiveness of the femoral head influenced the clinical results of the joint-preserving operations.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We used the so-called Asian size of prosthesis with proportionally smaller stem sizes in both diameter and length. Forty-seven stems and sockets were analyzed with a mean follow-up of 69 months. The mean Merle d’Aubigné hip scores were 8 points preoperatively and 16 points at the final follow-up. Radiologically, the stems showed excellent stability without loosening. Stress shielding around the stems did occur in most cases but did not progress. Preoperative bone quality influenced the extent of stress shielding evaluated at the final follow-up: higher stress shielding was noted in poorer quality bones at the time of operation. There were problems with the sockets. The shallow socket and impingement at the protruded rim seemed to cause a high incidence of dislocation (13%). Massive polyethylene wear occurred in 5 sockets. These sockets were 48 and 46 mm in diameter with 26 mm heads. In conclusion, the stems of the anatomic medullary locking hip prostheses used in Japan showed satisfactory stability even in poor quality bones, but there were problems with the polyethylene liners. Our solution was to use larger sockets with 22 mm heads.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Methods: Thirty-eight lesions in 16 patients were evaluated before and after administration of SHU-555-A by using fast spin echo (FSE), gradient echo (GRE), and echo planar (EP) imaging sequences using a 1.5-Tesla superconducting MR system. The signal intensity ratio (SIR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the lesions, signal-to-noise ratios, and other parameters were calculated. Results: Tumors were better detected after injection of SHU-555-A on all pulse sequences except on out-of-phase T1-weighted (T1W)-GRE sequences. Tumor detectability was higher for precontrast EP imaging and T2*-weighted (T2*W)-GRE sequences, whereas detectability at postcontrast was higher for T2*W-GRE, proton-density-weighted-FSE, and in-phase T1W-GRE sequences. The SIR and CNR at precontrast were highest for EP imaging, and those at postcontrast were highest for T2*W-GRE. Conclusion: SHU-555-A will increase the detectability of HCC and its liver metastases. T1W- and T2*W-GRE sequences would be the sequences of choice.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Abstract This paper proposes an approximate solution procedure for the prediction of the forced convection heat transfer through self-similar laminar boundary layers. The differential equations governing the viscous and thermal boundary layers have been reduced to a pair of algebraic equations for the boundary layer shape factor and the boundary layer thickness ratio. The local Nusselt number predicted under various pressure gradients turns out to be in excellent agreement with that of the exact solution over a wide range of the Prandtl number.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1439-863XKeywords: Key words Typhoon ; Rainwater ; Stable isotope ; Hydrogen and oxygenSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract The stable isotope ratios of hydrogen and oxygen were measured for rainwater samples from Typhoon No. 13, which struck Japan on September 1993, and Typhoon No. 6, which passed in July 1996. Rainwater was collected every hour over 2- to 3-day periods at Beppu, Japan (33°16′N, 131°29′E), which lies on or close to the typhoon routes. The deuterium excess parameters (δD – 8 ·δ18O) of the rainwaters vary over wide ranges from 19.22 to 1.52 for Typhoon No. 13, 1993, and from 6.02 to −8.10 for Typhoon No. 6, 1996, respectively. Rainwaters with higher d-values precipitated in the forward parts of the typhoons. This is ascribed to the possibility that the water vapors supplied by the bottom air currents from the front (rear) of the typhoons may be originally formed by rapid (gentle) evaporation of seawater. Symmetrical patterns of spatial δD and δ18O distributions within the typhoon precipitations, as estimated from the variations in the isotope ratios of the typhoon rainwaters, should appear from a continuous isotopic fractionation of water vapors with the bottom air currents converging toward the typhoon center. The weighted means of δD and δ18O of the typhoon precipitations are more negative than those of ordinary rainfall, suggesting that an isotopic influence of typhoon precipitation on surface waters, e.g., river, stream, lake, and spring waters, may be important.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
