An attempt is made to illustrate some of the principles of early development of muds in two contrasting lake basins which were devoid of vegetation cover before filling. Essentially the changes involve the dispersion and redistribution of particles in the newly flooded lake bottom. Field and laboratory observations are presented to demonstrate the interaction that exists between water chemistry, wave erosion and the burrowing activity of mud-dwelling insect larvae, and the effect of these factors on particle size sorting in the substrate. These characteristic changes in the mud during filling are compared with post-filling stage developments in which the role of extraneous material, including organic matter, may predominate.

Thyroglobulin autoantibodies synthesized by Hashimoto lymphocytes in culture and present in serum have been analysed in terms of their IgG subclass distribution. The autoantibodies produced in vitro were frequently IgG4 or IgG1. whether pokeweed mitogen or Epstein-Barr virus was used to stimulate the cultures, and the subclass distribution of these thyroglobulin antibodies was similar to that observed in the patients'serum. It appears therefore that the antibodies synthesized in vitro in response to polyclonal B-cell activators resemble those produced in vivo, and it seems likely that both pokeweed mitogen and Epstein-Barr virus influence the same B-cell precursors of autoantibody-synthesizing celts, albeit by different mechanisms.

    Notes:
Plaque assays have been used to study thyroglobulin autoantibody synthesis and total immunoglobulin production by cultures of peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Freshly isolated Hashimoto or normal lymphocytes contained small numbers (7–1300) of total IgG plaque-forming cells (PFC) and total IgM PFC, but specific thyroglobulin antibody PFC was undetectable. After 5–8 days' culture with pokeweed mitogen (PWM), total IgG and IgM PFC were markedly increased to a geometric mean of 10, 140 (8414–12,220) IgG PFC and 3450 (1663–7534) IgM PFC per 106 cultured lymphocytes (95% confidence limits in parentheses). Furthermore, a mean of 63 (22–287) specific IgG thyroglobulin antibody PFC per 106 lymphocytes were detectable in cultures of Hashimoto lymphocytes. The IgG thyroglobulin antibody PFC were stimulated by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, suggesting that EBV infection may be useful in obtaining monoclonal thyroid autoantibodies.

    Notes:
Summary A study of the bottom fauna and sediments of Lake Chilwa, Malawi, was carried out in late 1967 when the lake appeared to be drying out. The mud fauna at low lake level was poor, while skeletal remains suggested a more diverse and richer fauna, including a large mollusc community, when the level was higher earlier in the year. Sediments were characterised by high values for pH, conductivity, CaCO3 and exchangeable Na +. As the soils had been inundated at some stage, the results of analyses indicated the changes undergone by muds on exposure, namely loss of organic matter, phosphorus and exchangeable Na +. The physical nature of the substrate at low lake level rather than increased salinity is thought to have been largely responsible for the low benthic values. Potential problems of faunal re-colonisation are considered.

    Description / Table of Contents:
    Notes:
Summary Two experiments were carried out to determine the rate of release of ions to lake water from dry grass (largely Eragrostis species) and dung from elephant, impala and buffalo. The ions released most rapidly were PO3 3- and K+, followed by NO3 - and Ca2+ + Mg2+; the smallest increase was shown by Na+. In general, dung derived from grass released ions more rapidly than grass itself; the results are discussed in relation to ash analyses of grass and dung. The possible importance to Lake Kariba of the nutrients released by grass and dung following immersion under natural conditions is considered.
