    The dynamic soft response of polydomain liquid crystalline elastomers to simple shear is reported. Significantly, these materials also show extremely large loss behavior with tan δ exceeding 1 or even 1.5 over very wide temperature ranges, with clear implications for damping applications. By comparing materials that exhibit different types of liquid crystalline phases, we identify the nematic state as a better damping phase than that in materials with smectic phases. Additionally, we provide experimental evidence for directions which should be explored for further improvements in the damping behavior of liquid crystalline elastomers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Abstract Heat capacity measurements have been made to investigate the formation of two solid monolayers each of n-pentane, n-heptane and n-dodecane adsorbed on graphite, one at submonolayer coverages and the other coexisting with the liquid. At submonolayer coverages the monolayers are found to melt respectively at 99.8, 151.6, and 217.3 K, well below the bulk melting points. The monolayers coexisting with the liquid melted at 205.6 for heptane and at 287.8 K for dodecane, whereas no evidence was obtained for pentane on the formation of such solid monolayer above the bulk melting point. The order persisting in the liquid near the interface depends upon the length of the molecules. The dodecane monolayers showed another transitions below the melting points both at submonolayer and multilayer coverages.

    Abstract  To understand the properties of colloidal dispersions it is often vital to prepare model materials with particles that have a small polydispersity in order to make experimental tests of theories or models. However few preparations have been developed that yield anisotropic particles with a narrow size distribution and precise shape. In this paper the preparation of a dispersion of charge stabilized, tungstic acid particles is described. The particles are rectangular and have a length of 7.0 μm, a width of 2.8 μm and a thickness of 0.2 μm. The polydispersity is 8% in length and 10% in width, making it one of the most monodisperse dispersions of anisotropic particles. Each particle is monocrystalline and the crystal orientation is fixed with respect to the particle morphology. Some interesting behavior is observed: these particles aggregate perpendicular and parallel to each other to give flat, ordered flocs when the stability is reduced.

    We report on the structural study of a non-uniform (polydomain) director texture in nematic and smectic liquid crystalline elastomers. Polarised light scattering is used to probe the equilibrium director correlations in the region of transition under stress between the opaque polydomain material and the transparent, macroscopically monodomain elastomer. A characteristic four-peak scattering image is obtained in this transient region. The lobes of intensity are oriented along and perpendicular to the axes of crossed polarisers, with anisotropy along the direction of principal extension. We propose a theoretical model, based on the competition between the random disordering field due to the network crosslinks and the external aligning field

    The medial femoral circumflex artery (MFC) is important in its supply to the head and neck of the femur and to the adductor and hamstring muscles, several of which, notably the gracilis and biceps femoris, are used commonly in reconstructive surgical procedures. Considering the clinical significance of this artery, it is somewhat surprising to note the present lack of clarity of description and inconsistency of the nomenclature for this vessel and its branches, as seen in respected sources. This project was undertaken 1) to reexamine the origin, course, and distribution of the MFC and 2) to reevaluate the nomenclature in the anatomic and clinical literature for this artery and its branches. In 30 cadaveric specimens the MFC arose most commonly from the deep femoral artery (53%) or the femoral artery (40%). The MFC typically gave origin to two major ventral muscular branches and a small trochanteric branch before passing from the adductor compartment into the flexor compartment of the thigh. Thereafter, the MFC divided into an ascending branch to the hip and a descending branch to the hamstrings and sciatic nerve. We recommend the use of the terms “ascending” and “descending,” which are listed in the 6th Edition of the Nomina Anatomica, and the deletion of “transverse,” “superficial,” and “deep” as named branches of the MFC. We question the description of the “crucial” or “cruciate anastomosis,” as usually taught to medical students. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
