A design for a transmission x-ray microscope with 20 nm transverse spatial resolution is presented. The microscope, which is based on the electron-optical imaging of the photoemitted electrons from an x-ray shadowgraph, consists of a transmission x-ray photocathode coupled to a photoelectron emission microscope (PEEM—also called a PEM for photoelectron microscope). Unlike the conventional PEEM, which produces a surface map of photoelectron yield, this microscope can provide information on the subsurface properties of thin samples. The analysis of the microscope's electron-optical performance is based on the evaluation of Gaussian focusing properties and third-order aberration coefficients computed using several complementary methods. The electron optical properties of the microscope are examined with an emphasis on issues affecting overall performance and achieving the best possible resolution. Preliminary experimental results using a cesium iodide photocathode are shown. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

We present preliminary performance results for a new type of imaging microscope operating in the EUV and soft x-ray regions. This microscope is a true transmission microscope in which an unmagnified image of the sample is formed by differential absorption of the x-ray beam as it passes through the sample. The unmagnified photon image is converted into low energy secondary electrons at a thin CsI photocathode, and the subsequent electron pattern is magnified and imaged using a simple 3-lens system. Conversion of the magnified electron patern into visible photons occurs at a fine grain phosphor viewed by a CCD detector/computer combination that allows parallel detection of the original photon image in near real time with approximately 1000× magnification. The microscope has a theoretical resolution of 20 nm and a potentially wide range of uses including biology, materials science studies, and investigations into magnetic dichroism effects. The design and preliminary imaging results of the microscope will be presented and future directions discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Summary. Zinc concentration in serum and hair was measured in a cross-sectional study of 437 Chinese women of whom 310 were normal controls studied at various stages of pregnancy and up to 12 months after delivery. The rest had spontaneous abortions, fetuses with a birthweight below the 10th centile for gestation or congenital abnormalities. Zinc concentration fell throughout normal pregnancy, the fall being greater in serum than in hair. There was no correlation between serum and hair levels. The infant birthweight had a positive correlation with serum level but a negative correlation with hair level. Abortion, low birthweight and congenital abnormality were not associated with low concentrations of zinc in plasma or hair.
