Abstract It is shown that the dominant contribution of the breathing degree of freedom of the electron charge cloud is an effective three body interaction and an attractive two body interaction in addition to the usual overlap interaction. The explicit forms for these interactions are obtained and it is found that the form of the three body interaction is identical to that given in the deformable shell model (DSM).

Summary Slow-growing species ofRhizobium have a genome size almost double that of the fast-growing species. This provides additional support in favor of their being placed in separate genera.

Abstract The Aumann proposition establishes that an outcome in the β-core of the one-shot gameG is the same as the strong equilibrium utility allocations of the associated supergame. We refine the β-core by requiring that the threat strategies used to deter deviations be credible and examine the consequences for the Aumann proposition in the case of the refinement. We show that a refinement of the strong-equilibrium notion is always in the refined β-core. The converse is not necessarily true unless the utility allocations are linear.

Summary Helicoverpa armigera is one of the important insect pests adversely affecting the yield of potatoes in India. A synthetic gene encoding the insecticidal crystal protein (Cry1Ab) ofBacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been introduced into five genotypes of potato usingAgrobacterium tumefaciens. Southern analysis of DNA from transgenic plants confirmed the integration and copy number of the transgene. Double-antibody quantitative sandwich ELISA analysis demonstrated high levels of Cry1Ab protein expression in transgenic plants. Insect bioassays on the leaves of transgenic plants showed considerable protection against the larvae ofH. armigera in terms of leaf area consumed and larval weight reduction.

Summary Acetic acid, calcium chloride, aluminium sulphate and polyacrylamide were tried for flocculation and settling of suspended solids. Adjustment of pH, centrifugation, precoat filtration with filter aid were studied for clarification of fermentation broth in alpha-amylase production. Combination of aluminium sulphate and polyacrylamide as flocculating agents and precoat filtration was found to be the best strategy for alpha-amylase enzyme recovery from the broth.

Abstract A complete photoelastic stress analysis depends, in the majority of cases, on the accuracy of the fractional-fringe-order measurements. The error involved due to an error in the measurement of the isoclinic angle has been studied. It was found that the Tardy method was more accurate than the Sénarmont method, assuming negligible errors in the optical elements.
